The Engineering Group is responsible for our fleet or unmanned systems and buoys. We work on the design and integration of sensors, propulsion, control, and communication systems, as well as all preventative and corrective maintenance for the platforms and sensors. This position will work with the development team to test new concepts and incorporate them into existing products. This is a Full Time position based in Groton, CT

 

Director of Electrical Engineering

 

About the Role

This role will play a critical role in the design, development, and integration of electrical and embedded systems for ThayerMahan’s fleet of unmanned systems and buoys. This position will involve working on sensor integration, propulsion, control, and communication systems, as well as performing troubleshooting and maintenance to ensure reliability in maritime environments.

This is a full-time position based in Groton, CT.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of electronic and embedded systems for purpose-built marine equipment and robotics.
  • Design and integrate sensors and payloads into unmanned maritime platforms.
  • Utilize CAD, CAE, and simulation tools for circuit design, system modeling, and performance analysis.
  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues with equipment and sensors in both field and lab settings.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and test real-time signal processing and sensor data analysis software.
  • Oversee the development of technical documentation, build guides, and wiring schematics.
  • Apply research principles and standard laboratory instrumentation to engineering design efforts.
  • Develop, calibrate, and test new sensor and signal processing designs, ensuring functionality in harsh marine environments.
  • Provide mentorship to junior engineers, fostering technical growth and collaboration.
  • Participate in field deployments, assisting with equipment setup, data collection, and system testing.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Robotics Engineering, or a related field.
  • 7 years of experience in electrical or embedded system design, with a focus on marine or autonomous systems.
  • Experience designing and integrating serial communication protocols (CAN, RS485, Ethernet, I2C, SPI).
  • Knowledge of power monitoring, renewable energy sources, and energy-efficient systems.
  • Ability to develop and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and documentation AutoCad Electrical.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working in maritime environments, including underwater electronics and sensor integration.
  • Knowledge of sonar, acoustics, and marine robotics systems.
  • Develop custom PCBs to optimize off-the-shelf controllers, sensors, and networking components.
  • Strong background in circuit design, troubleshooting, and performance optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with waterproofing electrical systems for underwater applications.
  • Experience using PDM software similar to Autodesk Vault and Git.
  • Willingness to participate in field deployments, including short-duration trips at sea.

Salary : $155,000 - $175,000
