Summary
The Substation Superintendent oversees all field construction activities related to substation projects, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality installation of electrical equipment and systems. This position is responsible for managing field crews, coordinating with project management and engineering teams, maintaining schedules, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards, and promoting effective communication among stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Project Oversight & Execution:
- Supervise day-to-day field operations for substation construction, including site preparation, foundations, grounding, structural steel, bus work, control house installation, and electrical equipment installation.
- Ensure all work is performed in accordance with design drawings, technical specifications, and applicable standards (e.g., IEEE, NESC, NEC).
- Coordinate daily activities with project managers, engineers, foremen, and subcontractors.
- Review project plans and schedules to identify potential issues and implement corrective actions to maintain project timelines.
- Leadership & Supervision:
- Direct and oversee field personnel including foremen, equipment operators, and electricians.
- Provide on-site leadership and mentorship to crews, ensuring adherence to company policies and safety procedures.
- Conduct daily tailgate meetings and enforce jobsite safety practices in compliance with OSHA and company standards.
- Monitor crew productivity and quality, ensuring work is completed efficiently and correctly.
- Safety & Compliance:
- Maintain a culture of safety excellence on all job sites.
- Perform regular site inspections and safety audits.
- Ensure compliance with all environmental, safety, and health regulations.
- Investigate and report incidents, ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
- Materials & Equipment Management:
- Coordinate the delivery and use of materials, tools, and equipment required for project execution.
- Verify material quantities against design documents and procurement lists.
- Ensure proper handling and installation of high-voltage components such as transformers, breakers, disconnect switches, bus supports, and control cables.
- Quality Control & Documentation:
- Conduct inspections throughout the project to ensure quality and conformance with specifications.
- Maintain accurate daily reports, work logs, and project documentation.
- Support commissioning and testing activities in coordination with project engineers.
- Communication & Coordination:
- Serve as the primary on-site contact for the client and project team.
- Participate in project meetings and provide updates on progress, risks, and resource needs.
- Collaborate with other departments to resolve technical issues and improve construction methods.
Qualifications
- Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical degree or electrical apprenticeship preferred.
- Minimum 7–10 years of experience in utility substation construction, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
- Experience with substations up to 345kV (or higher) preferred.
- Proven track record managing field crews, schedules, and budgets on complex electrical construction projects.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- In-depth understanding of substation construction processes, drawings, and standards.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and construction management software (e.g., Procore, Primavera, or similar).
- Demonstrated commitment to safety and quality.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Must be willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions and travel to project sites as required.
- The selected candidate will be expected to be onsite to manage projects, and if a project is located too far for daily commuting, they may need to remain on location through the work week.
- Ability to stand, walk, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- May require extended hours, nights, or weekends depending on project demands.
