What are the responsibilities and job description for the Med/Surg Registered Nurse (Nights) position at TEXAS INSTITUTE FOR SURGERY?
Shift time: 6:45pm - 7:15am
The Staff RN of the Medical/Surgical Unit provides high-quality, evidence-based care to a diverse patient population, including those recovering from orthopedic, spine, ENT, ophthalmology, cosmetic, urology, oral maxillofacial and other surgeries as scheduled, as well as patients undergoing medical substance abuse detoxification. The Staff Nurse adheres to the standards of care and practice and acts as a resource to other staff members.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Deliver safe, high-quality direct patient care to patients across a broad range of medical/surgical needs.
- Assess, plan, document, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans for patients in collaboration with the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Monitor and manage post-operative patients, including wound care, pain control, mobility assistance, drain/catheter maintenance, respiratory and cardiac function. Respond appropriately to medical emergencies as needed.
- Provide care and support for patients undergoing medical detox, including vital signs monitoring, withdrawal assessments, and symptom management.
- Administers medications and treatments as prescribed and in accordance with hospital policies.
- Educate patients and their families about procedures, post-operative care, detox support, discharge planning, and overall health maintenance.
- Communicate effectively with physicians, therapists, case managers, and all other healthcare professionals in the interdisciplinary team.
- Accurately document patient care, assessments, interventions and all other appropriate information in accordance with hospital policies in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Adhere to infection control, safety protocols, and hospital policies. Maintains a working knowledge and thorough understanding of all equipment and utilities and provides knowledgeable guidance and evaluation of the environment of care management including life safety (fire prevention), security, hazardous materials and waste management, emergency preparedness, infection control, and the safe use of medical equipment and utilities.
- Must work within scope of practice. Performs other duties as assigned.
- Education & Training:
- Associate's degree in nursing required
- Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred
- Experience:
- 1-2 years of acute care experience as a Registered Nurse (experience in Med/Surg, Spine, Ortho, ENT, or Medical Detox is preferred).
- Licensure/Certification/Registration:
- Current RN license in the state of Texas
- BLS
- ACLS
- PALS
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as employees may occasionally be required to operate a company vehicle. Reasonable accommodations may be provided as required by law.
