Job Overview
The Senior CNC Maintenance Technician is responsible for ensuring the optimal performance, reliability, and safety of CNC controlled systems (mills, lathes, saws, etc.) and related production equipment. This role requires an expert-level understanding of CNC systems, preventative and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate will serve as a technical leader within the maintenance team, mentoring junior technicians and driving uptime performance across the facility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform advanced troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repair of CNC equipment (mills, lathes, saws, etc.) and supporting equipment (electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and control systems).
- Develop and execute preventive and predictive maintenance programs to maximize machine uptime and extend equipment lifecycle.
- Observes mechanical devices in operation to locate causes of trouble. Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts using hoists, cranes, hand tools and power tools; starts devices to test performance.
- Calibrate and align CNC machinery to meet production quality standards.
- Interpret technical manuals, schematics, and engineering specifications to diagnose and resolve issues.
- Collaborate with production teams to minimize downtime and ensure machines meet precision and quality requirements.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, parts usage, and service reports.
- Identify opportunities for equipment upgrades and process improvements.
- Initiates purchase orders for parts and equipment.
- Ability to work all shifts (including weekends) and on-call for plant emergencies.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, OSHA regulations, LOTO, and company policies.
- Mentor and train junior maintenance staff on best practices and advanced repair techniques.
- Support capital equipment installation, commissioning, and validation.
- Sets the highest ethical standards for self and others.
Education, Skills and Experience
- Minimum 7 years of hands-on CNC machine maintenance experience (mills and lathes required; additional multi-axis machine experience preferred).
- Strong knowledge of CNC control systems (Fanuc, Siemens, Mazak, Haas, or similar).
- Proficient in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Ability to read and interpret technical blueprints, wiring diagrams, and service manuals.
- Experience with predictive maintenance technologies (thermal imaging, vibration analysis, laser alignment, etc.).
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently under minimal supervision.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Demonstrated leadership and mentoring abilities.
- Ability to diagnose issues with HMI, drives and power supplies.
- Ability to install and configure drives
- Must be able to communicate with the production floor associates as well as upper management.
- MSOffice Suite to include Word and Excel.
- Must be able to work alone as well as in a group setting.
- Demonstrate Math proficiency as it relates to this job.
- Use, read, and interpret common measurements from calipers, micrometers, or tape measure.
- Add/Subtract/Multiply/Divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals
- High school diploma or GED required; technical degree, apprenticeship, or certifications (e.g., NIMS, Siemens, Fanuc) preferred.
