Job Title: Health Policy Intern

Brief Job Description

The Texas Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General was established to combat fraud, waste, and abuse in publicly funded Health and Human Services programs. The OIG Policy and Strategic Initiatives team supports this mission by providing OIG staff with policy guidance, making policy and contract recommendations, and evaluating and recommending potential future work (e.g., audits, inspections, investigations, data reviews).

We are seeking a thoughtful, curious intern to join the policy team for the 2026 summer semester. The internship offers the opportunity to gain real-world experience in policy research, critical thinking, data analysis and persuasive writing. The ideal candidate is a strong thinker and writer; is persistent, self-motivated and organized; and has a passion for public service.

Essential Job Functions

  • Conducts policy research to inform future audits, inspections, investigations, and data reviews. Research topics may span the entire Texas health and human services (HHS) system and Texas Medicaid programs and services.
  • Evaluates potential policy and program integrity issues and makes recommendations.
  • Researches policy questions and works with subject matter experts to provide accurate and clear policy guidance to OIG staff.
  • Develops reference materials for OIG staff.
  • Attends policy meetings with OIG leadership.

  • Knowledge of, and ability to read and interpret, state and federal laws and rules.
  • Skills analyzing complex subject matter and relaying key information.
  • Skills working well with individuals and teams toward a common goal.
  • Skills using office equipment and software (e.g., Microsoft Office suite).
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to prepare well-written, concise briefing documents and reports, and visually dynamic presentations.

  • Currently enrolled in a Juris Doctor (J.D.) or master’s degree program in health policy, public policy, social science, public health, public affairs, or a related field.
