Primary Purpose:
Responsible for on-site leadership of vehicle repair and maintenance at multiple locations. Perform major mechanical repairs with no supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of all district vehicles.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- High School Diploma/GED required.
- Clear and valid Texas commercial driver’s license (A or B) with passenger (P) and school bus (S) endorsement required, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
- Texas School Bus Driver Safety Training Certificate (20 hour course) required, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
- Certified Texas State Vehicle Safety Inspector.
- Mechanic certification (i.e. ASE).
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Advanced knowledge of automotive mechanics and maintenance.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently.
- Ability to access, read, and interpret documents such as safety regulations, operating and maintenance inspection rules, procedure manuals, and vehicle service manuals.
- Ability to direct and supervise personnel at multiple locations.
- Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol/drug tests and annual physical exam.
- Ability to access and use service materials.
- Ability to operate bus and drive route when needed.
- Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Must have working knowledge of a computer and the ability to research using the internet, use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook (email) effectively, and other required computer programs.
- Maintaining regular and reliable attendance are essential functions of the job.
Experience:
- 5 years experience in vehicle repair and maintenance with advanced knowledge of automotive diagnostics, vehicle repair and maintenance processes.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Maintenance and Repair
- Process and prioritize vehicle repair work orders. Evaluate and recommend all repairs and calculate cost estimates. Arrange for outside repairs when work cannot be performed in shop.
- Assign work to lead master mechanics, mechanics, and mechanic helpers. Oversee completion of work and inspect completed work for quality.
- Establish preventive maintenance and care schedules.
- Consult with other mechanics to help resolve repair problems and help train mechanics and mechanic assistants.
- Perform major and minor mechanical repairs, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and inspections on all district vehicles in a timely and efficient manner and without supervision. Maintain accurate, up–to-date preventative maintenance records.
- Rebuild, replace, or repair vehicle parts such as engines, brakes, transmission lines, electrical assemblies, and accessories.
Inspection
- Perform state safety inspections for all district vehicles.
Safety
- Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing.
- Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
- Ensure shop, equipment, and tools are kept in safe operating condition.
- Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Other
- Conduct annual inventory of equipment and supplies. Recommend replacement of equipment when needed.
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required.
- Operate school buses and vehicles as needed.
- Attend professional growth activities to keep abreast of innovations related to position.
- Willing and able to be on call 24/7.
- Perform other duties as assigned and required.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Direct the work of lead master mechanics, mechanics, and mechanic helpers at two transportation terminals.
