Tenure-Track/Tenured: Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor - Equine Soft Tissue

The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS), Texas A&M University (TAMU) invites applications for a full-time, 11-month/year, tenure-track or tenured faculty position in Equine Soft Tissue Surgery. This appointment is at the Tenured or Tenure-Track rank (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor), commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Applicants must have a collegial, team-centered work attitude and excellent communication skills with animal owners, faculty colleagues, veterinary and graduate students, house officers, technicians, and hospital staff. In addition, faculty members are expected to commit to holding themselves and colleagues accountable to the VMBS code of professional conduct. The anticipated start date is Winter 2026.

The faculty position will devote approximately 40-50% effort to clinical service, 10-20% to didactic teaching, 30-40% to research and scholarly activities, and 10% to service.

• Scholarly activity: The faculty member will be expected to engage in scholarly activity that is synergistic with the College’s research, teaching, and clinical service missions. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and sustain an extramurally funded, creative, and productive research program in relevant fields of interest that could involve professional students, residents, and/or graduate students. Contributions to collaborative research are also valued. A competitive start-up support package will be provided.
• Clinical service: The Equine Soft Tissue Surgery service is shared by 2 surgeons on a rotational basis. It is staffed with 2-3 full-time technicians and a complement of surgery residents and interns. The caseload consists of upper airway, urogenital, gastrointestinal, and body wall/integument cases. The service sees both elective and emergency cases, with all surgeons sharing in after-hours and holiday coverage with the support of 2 dedicated emergency surgeons. Available diagnostic equipment includes 1m and 3m endoscopes, dynamic endoscopy, ultrasound, and advanced diagnostic imaging including CT/MRI capabilities. Five OR suites accommodate orthopedic, soft tissue, and colic cases as well as separate standing surgery suites for laparoscopy/laser surgery and dental procedures. An intensive care unit and isolation facility are available to all clinicians and are fully staffed 24 hours per day and 365 days per year. Outdoor facilities include a covered riding arena and non-climate-controlled stalls.
• Teaching: The faculty member is expected to participate in the education of graduate students and professional veterinary students, and the clinical training of surgery residents and interns. Teaching responsibilities include instruction of didactic courses for students in the pre-clinical portion of the veterinary curriculum, clinical instruction of fourth-year veterinary students on the soft tissue rotation, participation in a variety of department and interdepartmental rounds and seminars, and training of rotating interns and residents. The faculty member should be an effective teacher. The development of innovative instructional delivery is encouraged and valued.
  
  
  

The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences includes over 50 faculty members with varied backgrounds and scholarly interests. Faculty members are located at the Texas A&M University campus in College Station and at the Veterinary Education Research and Outreach (VERO) program at the campus of West Texas A&M University in Canyon. Clinical units at College Station include Equine Internal Medicine, Equine Surgery, Equine Theriogenology, Equine Primary Care, Equine Sports Medicine, Food Animal Medicine and Surgery, Food Animal Field Services, and Diagnostic Imaging. Additionally, the department provides ambulatory service to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice animal units through a team of faculty members dedicated to this service.

Pre-clinical training in College Station occurs within our Veterinary & Biomedical Education Complex (VBEC), a 330,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art educational facility. VBEC is home to a variety of educational venues for lectures, laboratories, small group learning, and an array of hands-on skills training. This complex also houses the Center for Educational Technologies, which provides pedagogical support to faculty for teaching and learning. Our 34,000-square-foot VERO facility was completed in 2020 on the campus of WTAMU in Canyon, Texas, and supports key research, clinical rotations, and outreach initiatives focused on the livestock industry and service to rural communities in the Texas Panhandle.

The community of Bryan and College Station has a combined approximate population of 300,000 and is an expanding and dynamic metropolitan area with a wide variety of cultural and recreational opportunities, excellent schools, and a relatively low cost of living.

Required Qualifications:

• Applicants must have a DVM (or equivalent) degree
• PhD in a relevant field
• Board certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) or be eligible to take Phase II of the ACVS examination
• Established program or positive trajectory of reasearch
• Interest, experience, training and expertise in teaching in clinical programs and graduate education
• Provide high-quality patient care for a referral population of large animal surgical patients
• Must meet requirements for veterinary licensure in the State of Texas
• Possession of, or eligibility for, a DEA certificate
