A Glimpse of the Job

Provides counseling services to assist all students to identify, mitigate and/or remove barriers that impede their ability to reach their academic, career and personal goals. Responds to a crisis and Campus/College-critical incidents requiring services (e.g. classroom/group debriefing, supportive counseling). Responsible and accountable for a caseload of at-risk students, as well as serving on a team of on-call counselors. Serves with a team of counselors to provide counseling aboard our Training Ship with our Maritime Academy during the summer Sea Term.

Essential Duties/Tasks:

DIRECT CLIENT SERVICES

  • Provides mental health and wellness counseling services to all enrolled students which includes but is no limited to intake and assessment, maintaining and is responsible for a caseload, rotating on-call telephone responsibilities.

  • Serves as primary contact person for Community Agencies, including: Gulf Coast Services, Resources & Crisis Center, UTMB Family Services Clinic, Bay Area Council on Drugs and Alcohol, Ball High Teen Clinic, National Alliance for Mental Illness, etc.

EDUCATION, PROGRAM AND EVENT ADMINISTRATION

  • Responsible for wellness/mental health programing and educational opportunities to the campus community on behalf of the Counseling Office, in collaborative, innovative ways with invested partners both with in Student Affairs and outside of Student Affairs Division (i.e. Campus Faculty, Police Department, and External Community).

  • Leads and/or supports campus initiatives such as Mental Health First Aid/101, Suicide Prevention Trainings, Title XI, Health Fairs, etc.

DEPARTMENT ADMINISTRATION

  • Assists the Director of Counseling with day-to-day office administration tasks such as managing office coverage, office calendars, meeting agendas, updating counseling website, administering surveys and reports that support the department and university’s mission.

  • Represents the Counseling Department on various committees, and groups as assigned.

  • Maintains counseling files, guidelines and confidentiality as licensure requires.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND OTHER

  • Maintaining professional licensure and training.

  • Encouraged to be an active member of a professional organization related to job duties.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in counseling, psychology, marriage and family therapy, or social work.

  • Practical/field placement relevant to college counseling, or supervised experience related to job function.

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • Counseling Licensure (i.e. LPC, LCSW, LMFT, or Licensed Psychologist).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of three (3) years of job related experience

  • Doctorate in Counseling, Psychology or other specialty related to job function

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of database, spreadsheet, presentation, and word processing software.

  • Excellent interpersonal, writing and verbal skills to build relationship across campus community (students, staff, and faculty) as well as mental health community in Galveston-Houston area

Other Requirements and Factors

  • This position is security sensitive

  • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU policies, regulations, rules and procedures

  • All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and University safety requirements

  • May work non-standard hours in support of student/campus crisis or other events that support counseling mission.
