The Opportunity

Tetra Tech is looking for a full-time Analytical or Environmental Chemist to work in our Duluth, GA office.

Position Summary

Provide analytical chemistry-related support for environmental projects involving federal, tribal, state, local, and private clients. Responsible for conducting up to Stage 4 data validation and data quality assessments, providing chemistry support in the areas of laboratory coordination and procurement, planning document preparation, and task and project management support. Work collaboratively with a team of experienced chemists, scientists, and engineers who provide data validation services to clients across the company.

  • Support environmental emergency response activities; field investigations (involving soil, sediment, water, and air sampling); coordination with analytical laboratories; and data planning, collection, and evaluation.
  • Provide task and project management support, including procurement and oversight of subcontract laboratories.
  • Work collaboratively with and under the supervision of a project or program manager.
  • Support preparation of and technical writing for reports (various formats), standard operating procedures, and more.
  • Prepare other technical deliverables including databases, proposals, cost estimates, tables, and figures.
  • Interact with Tetra Tech offices nationwide, and with subcontractors, stakeholders, and clients.

Required Qualifications

  • BS/BA degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline is required.
  • At least five (5) years of relevant experience in conducting validation of laboratory analytical data according to EPA and other government guidance and protocols

Specifically, You Will Have

  • Experience and advanced proficiency in conducting data validation of all Stages (Stages 1 through 4 as defined in EPA's Guidance for Labeling Externally Validated Laboratory Analytical Data for Superfund Use [January 2009]).
  • Depth of experience in conducting multiple Stages of data validation, up to and including Stage 4 reviews of full (Level 4) laboratory data packages; must include experience with recalculating instrument calibration equations and quality control (QC) and field sample results, and interpreting chromatograms and mass spectra in support of target analyte identification.
  • Significant experience in the use and application of the EPA National Functional Guidelines for organic, inorganic, and high-resolution data review.
  • Broad experience validating analytical data for both organic and inorganic parameters, including for EPA SW-846 Methods 8260 (volatile organic compounds); 8270 (semivolatile organic compounds); 8081 (organochlorine pesticides); 8151 (herbicides); 8290 (dioxins and furans); 8330 (explosives); 6010/6020/7470/7471 (metals and mercury); and 6850 (perchlorate).
  • Full knowledge, familiarity with, and understanding of the various compendiums of laboratory analytical methods, including EPA SW-846, EPA toxic organic methods in ambient air, and the Contract Laboratory Program Statements of Work.
  • Experience conducting data quality assessments and writing data quality assessment reports that summarize the reconciliation of a project's data quality with the stated project data quality objectives.
  • Proficiency in interpreting field and laboratory analytical data and preparation of technical reports.
  • Experience preparing technical reports, memos, response to comments tables, data tables, and figures.
  • Ability to interface with clients, subcontractors, working groups, and internal customers.
  • Communicate effectively and make evaluated decisions for the betterment of the client and the company.
  • Strong writing skills are critical
  • Flexible and able to manage multiple demands successfully.

  • Drug testing if mobilized to certain sites

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred experience in /with:

  • Advanced data validation
  • Laboratory analysis, field chemistry, and field sample collection for site investigations and emergency response efforts.
  • Conducting data validation of the analysis of samples (for example, via EPA Method 537.1 and EPA Draft Method 1633) for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.
  • Relevant field experience in collecting environmental samples across all media (soil, sediment, water, waste, and air); and the proper preservation, handling, and shipping of environmental samples to laboratories.
  • Reviewing and managing environmental data and databases using software such as Microsoft Access or EarthSoft Environmental Quality Information System (EQuIS).
  • Field chemistry activities, especially hazard classification/categorization of unknown materials.
  • Field analysis and analytical laboratory operations. This includes: performing preparatory and analytical procedures associated with gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) methods, such as EPA SW-846 Methods 8015, 8081, 8082, 8260, 8270, or equivalent methods; performing preparatory and analytical procedures associated with inorganic SW-846 Methods 6010, 6020, 7470, and 7471; using portable x-ray fluorescence analyzers; using commercially available semi-quantitative field screening methods; conducting routine maintenance of analytical equipment and instruments; and conducting laboratory operations such as using laboratory balances; preparing calibration standards, internal standards, surrogate or deuterated monitoring compound standards, and laboratory QC samples; and conducting instrument calibrations.
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER Training
  • Fluency in other languages besides English

Work Environment/Environmental Factors (Required)

The work environment consists of mostly office work with potential minimal field work. You must be able to work in the field 20% of the time.

Physical Requirements (Required)

Physical demands include but are not limited to remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time while in the office as well as working in the field. You must be able to:

  • Work at a computer in an office environment for office-based tasks.
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions, including both extreme hot and cold.
  • Walk on uneven terrain
  • Pack heavy equipment
  • Conduct excavations using hand tools
  • Carry field equipment (35 to 40 pounds)
  • Don personal protective gear as needed
  • You must be able to drive on a regular basis.
  • Passing a motor vehicle record background check and maintaining a valid driver’s license and safe driving record is required.

Additional Information (Required)

  • Work schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 – 5:00pm
  • Able and willing to work beyond traditional hours, including evenings and weekends, to meet client deadlines.
  • Work location: Tetra Tech’s Duluth, GA office.
  • Travel requirements: 20% and includes primarily to any state within EPA Region 4. Florida to NC, as far west as Mississippi and northwest to Tennessee.
  • This arrangement is subject to review and may change at the company’s discretion
