ACT Team Leader – Behavioral Health

Tesseract RVA
Richmond, Virginia
Full-time

Job summary

Tesseract RVA is seeking a full-time ACT Team Leader to lead a growing Assertive Community Treatment team serving adults with serious mental illness in the Richmond area.

This is a hands-on clinical leadership position. The Team Leader oversees daily team operations, provides clinical supervision and guidance, supports regulatory and documentation compliance, coordinates services across the multidisciplinary team, and participates in direct community-based services when appropriate.

We are a small, physician-owned behavioral health organization building a practical, collaborative, and recovery-oriented ACT program. This position offers an opportunity to help shape the team as it grows rather than stepping into a large corporate system.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily ACT team operations and coordinate multidisciplinary service delivery.
  • Lead daily team meetings, case reviews, staffing discussions, and service planning.
  • Provide clinical and administrative supervision to assigned ACT staff.
  • Help ensure that services are person-centered, recovery-oriented, and responsive to each client’s needs.
  • Monitor client progress, risk, engagement, hospitalization history, and changing service needs.
  • Review assessments, individualized service plans, progress notes, and other clinical documentation.
  • Ensure timely, accurate, and compliant documentation consistent with DBHDS, Medicaid, payer, and organizational requirements.
  • Provide coaching, training, feedback, and support to team members.
  • Coordinate with hospitals, crisis programs, outpatient providers, pharmacies, family members, guardians, housing providers, and other community supports.
  • Assist the team with crisis assessment, de-escalation, safety planning, and coordination with emergency or higher levels of care.
  • Participate in direct community-based services and client contacts as part of the ACT team.
  • Support quality improvement, incident review, compliance activities, audits, and corrective-action efforts.
  • Help develop schedules and ensure adequate coverage for client needs, after-hours response, and required ACT operating hours.
  • Participate in hiring, onboarding, performance evaluation, and development of ACT staff.
  • Perform other reasonable duties related to ACT leadership and program development.

Required qualifications

Candidates must meet one of the following Virginia ACT Team Leader qualification pathways:

  • A Virginia-licensed mental health professional, such as an LCSW, LPC, licensed clinical psychologist, LMFT, or other qualifying LMHP, with at least three years of experience providing mental health services to adults with serious mental illness;
  • A Virginia-registered resident in counseling with at least three years of experience providing mental health services to adults with serious mental illness;
  • A Virginia-registered resident in psychology with at least three years of experience providing mental health services to adults with serious mental illness; or
  • A Virginia-registered supervisee in social work with at least three years of experience providing mental health services to adults with serious mental illness.

The position must be held on a full-time basis.

Additional qualifications

  • Master’s or doctoral degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or a related behavioral-health field.
  • Strong experience working with adults with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, other psychotic disorders, or similarly serious and persistent mental illness.
  • Ability to supervise and support a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong clinical judgment, organization, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in community settings, including client homes and other non-office environments.
  • Familiarity with clinical documentation, individualized service planning, crisis response, and care coordination.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and manage competing clinical and operational priorities.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to successfully complete required background, registry, exclusion, and driving-record checks.

Preferred experience

  • Prior ACT, intensive community treatment, case management, crisis, inpatient, or community behavioral-health experience.
  • Familiarity with Virginia DBHDS and Medicaid behavioral-health requirements.
  • Experience supervising clinicians, nurses, case managers, peer specialists, or other multidisciplinary staff.
  • Experience reviewing clinical records for quality and compliance.
  • Experience working with co-occurring mental health and substance-use disorders.

Schedule

This is a full-time position based in Richmond, Virginia. The position involves a combination of office-based and community-based work. Some evening, weekend, holiday, or after-hours availability may be required as part of ACT program operations and crisis coverage.
