What to Expect

Tesla is seeking a Battery Launch Engineer to own holistic product improvement for Megapack and other energy storage products, from factoryrampthrough production sustaining and field quality. This role is embedded on the factory floor and serves as the design team's primary liaison to manufacturing, process, and quality teams.You'lldebug issues on the production line, investigate field failures, and find the right solution, whetherthat'sa design change, a process update, or a manufacturing improvement. This requires strong mechanical design fundamentals, manufacturing awareness, and the judgment to know which lever to pull.


What You'll Do
  • Serve as the designteam'sontheground representative in the factory, working daily alongside manufacturing, process, and quality teams to translate design intent into production reality
  • Supporttheproductrampfrominitialbuildstomature builds,ensuring designsareoptimizedformanufacturability(DFM)andassembly(DFA)
  • Work with suppliers to ensure components meet design intent and quality standards, driving corrective action when theydon't
  • Debug production issues in real time,identifyingwhether root cause is design, process, or manufacturing driven.Determinethe right solution and own the implementation through theappropriate channel
  • Own sustaining mechanical design changes driven by production feedback, resolving build issues, improving yields, and driving cost and performance improvements back into the design
  • Review parts, assemblies, and production output with a critical eye,identifyingfit, finish, tolerance, and workmanship issuesbefore they become systemic problems
  • Conduct root cause analysis on field qualityissues, then drive corrective actions through designmitigations, process updates, or specification clarifications
  • Develop and execute design validation plans and test methods to confirm components and subsystems meet requirements, including validation of corrective actions and design mitigations driven by RCA, in collaboration with design and cross-functional teams
  • Create andmaintainengineering documentation including design change records, process workflows, SOPs, and launch readiness checklists
  • Travel as needed to support supplier quality, sister factories, or launch/ sustainingactivities at other Tesla facilities

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor'sDegree inMechanicalEngineeringor equivalent experience, with 3 years of mechanical design experience. You have personally designed, detailed, and released parts or assemblies into high-volume production
  • Strong engineering fundamentals in material science, heat transfer, mechanics, and fluids, with working knowledge of materials used in mechanical design (metals, plastics, insulators, connectors, gaskets, etc.) and their fabrication processes (injection molding, machining, welding, brazing, sheet metal, extrusions, casting, forging, bonding, etc.)
  • Proficiencyin CAD (SolidWorks, CATIA, NX, or similar) with strong working knowledge of tolerances and a demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, andspecifications with a sharp eye for whatdoesn'tlook right
  • Familiarity with design for reliability/FMEA concepts, PLM/engineering change systems, and PCBA/electrical systems
  • Comfortable using data to drive decisions.Proficiencyin Excel and familiarity with tools such as MATLAB, Python, Minitab, JMP, orsimilar fordata analysis, trend identification, and statistical methods (SPC, 8D, etc.)
  • Comfortable working on a production floor daily - this role is factory-embedded, not desk-embedded
  • Excellentproblemsolvinginstincts and the practical judgmentto distinguish between a cosmetic concern and a functional risk
  • Strong communicationskills.You'llbe the translator between design engineers and factory teams, so clarity matters
  • Experience with launch, NPI, or manufacturing/quality/process engineering in a high-volume production environment is a plus
  • Experience with energy storage systems, high-voltage battery products, or battery cell manufacturing and fundamentals (swelling, DCR, PPR, etc.) is a plus
