Position Overview:
We are seeking a skilled Startup & Commissioning Technician to support the successful turnover of mechanical systems on commercial and industrial projects. This role plays a key part in ensuring systems are started up, sequenced, commissioned, and transitioned smoothly into operational use. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with HVAC and plumbing systems and a strong ability to troubleshoot and optimize system performance in the field.
This individual will coordinate with project managers, field crews, and vendors to deliver a high-quality final product and support owner training and warranty processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in piping system flushing and document completion
- Activate equipment and log starting conditions
- Adjust system settings to meet design and specification requirements
- Ensure readiness of equipment for vendor startups
- Troubleshoot and resolve startup issues across mechanical and electrical systems
- Assist in pre-testing of controls and DDC point-to-point verification
- Execute commissioning activities and support field coordination
- Assist commissioning agents with on-site support and information
- Participate in and support the coordination of owner training sessions
- Participate in QA/QC punch list walkdowns
- Assign and follow up on punch list items with appropriate field personnel
- Confirm closeout of punch list items and verify quality standards are met
- Lead field crews during commissioning activities to ensure productivity and adherence to process
- Set the standard for installation quality and assist in communicating expectations to the field team
- Ensure all work meets or exceeds quality requirements within the budget and schedule constraints
- Work closely with project managers to schedule and coordinate all startup and commissioning tasks
- Coordinate effectively with other trades on critical path items
- Operate and maintain special tools and equipment such as flow meters, flow hoods, and temporary cooling systems
- Procure materials needed to support tasks within contract scope, including special wiring, refrigerant for DX startup, glycol, and miscellaneous repair parts
Qualifications & Skills
- Minimum 2 years of experience in mechanical service, equipment startup, or commissioning
- Strong working knowledge of HVAC and plumbing systems, including controls and sequences of operation
- Understanding of system startup, test and balance, and commissioning procedures
- Familiarity with electrical systems and the ability to troubleshoot both line voltage and low voltage (24V) systems
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues in:
- Electrical circuits and components
- Control systems
- Mechanical systems (chillers, cooling towers, air handlers, fans)
- Plumbing systems (air compressors, sump pumps, hydronic systems)
- Universal EPA Certification recommended (must obtain within 1 year of hire)
- Proficient in reading and interpreting installation manuals, drawings, and technical documents
- Valid driver’s license required
- Ability to travel 70% of the time regionally to support projects as needed
- Experience with brazing and nitrogen purge techniques
- Skilled in equipment assembly, disassembly, and activation
