What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical CAD Designer / Drafter position at TES Recruiting?
Mechanical CAD Designer / Drafter – AutoCAD & Inventor
Location: Louisville, KY
Employment Type: Direct Hire | Full-Time | On-Site
Compensation: $55,000–$60,000 per year
We are seeking a Mechanical CAD Designer / Drafter to support the design, documentation, fabrication, and installation of custom industrial equipment.
This is a hands-on, on-site opportunity for someone with a solid mechanical-design foundation who wants to grow in a real fabrication and industrial-equipment environment. You will work with experienced engineering and fabrication teams to create accurate drawings, support active projects, and learn how equipment moves from design through fabrication and installation.
What You’ll Do
- Create and revise mechanical part, weldment, assembly, and installation drawings using AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor.
- Support the development of Bills of Materials for fabricated mechanical assemblies.
- Update existing drawings and documentation to reflect project requirements, field changes, and fabrication needs.
- Research prior drawings and job files to identify reusable designs, components, and reference information.
- Work with engineering and fabrication teams to clarify drawing details and resolve questions during production.
- Assist with measurements of existing equipment and assemblies for project documentation, modifications, and reverse-engineering work.
- Help document materials and components such as sheet metal, structural steel, hardware, bearings, reducers, and other mechanical items.
- Assist with drawing checks, revisions, document control, and release for fabrication.
- Support basic project calculations, engineering documentation, and continuous improvement efforts.
- Follow company and site safety requirements while working in the shop or visiting customer locations.
What We’re Looking For
- Two or more years of experience in mechanical drafting, CAD design, fabrication detailing, or a related industrial environment.
- Experience with AutoCAD required.
- Exposure to Autodesk Inventor, 3D mechanical modeling, or similar design software preferred.
- Ability to read and create mechanical detail and assembly drawings.
- Interest in fabricated equipment, weldments, structural steel, sheet metal, or industrial machinery.
- Basic familiarity with Bills of Materials and mechanical components.
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn from engineering and fabrication teams.
- Comfortable working in an on-site industrial and fabrication environment.
- Able to take accurate measurements and occasionally visit customer or field locations as needed.
- Technical degree, certificate, or relevant hands-on mechanical/design experience preferred.
- OSHA 10-Hour certification or ability to complete required safety training preferred.
The Opportunity
This role is a good fit for a developing mechanical designer who wants broader exposure than a desk-only CAD job. You will gain experience supporting custom industrial equipment, working with a fabrication shop, and seeing drawings become finished assemblies.
