The Painter, under the direction of the Lead Painter and Facilities Manager, will be responsible for applying paint, stain, and other finishes to various surfaces, including walls, ceilings, doors, windows, and furniture. The ideal candidate should have a strong knowledge of painting techniques, surface preparation, and safety protocols, with the ability to work efficiently in both commercial and residential environments. The ideal candidate will be willing to learn new things, and research material compatibilities, and application techniques.
General Painting Duties:
- Maintain the appearance and finish of Terwilliger Plaza by performing interior and exterior painting projects as directed by Facilities Management.
- Prepare and finish a variety of surfaces, including walls, ceilings, doors, trim, cabinetry, and other building components.
- Apply paints, primers, stains, enamels, sealers, and specialty coatings using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment as appropriate.
- Prepare surfaces by cleaning, scraping, sanding, patching, filling, caulking, and priming for proper adhesion and a quality finish.
- Protect adjacent surfaces, furnishings, and equipment by masking, taping, covering, and removing or reinstalling fixtures as needed.
- Match existing paint colors and finishes to maintain a consistent appearance throughout the facility.
- Estimate material quantities, maintain inventory, and order paints, coatings, and supplies as needed.
- Inspect painted surfaces for defects and perform touch-ups, repairs, and routine repainting as part of a preventive maintenance program.
- Clean, maintain, and safely store painting tools, equipment, and work areas to ensure safe and efficient operations.
- Follow all applicable safety procedures, including the proper handling, storage, and disposal of paints, solvents, chemicals, and related materials.
- Safely operate ladders, scaffolding, lifts, and other equipment required to access elevated work areas.
- Coordinate painting activities to minimize disruption to residents, staff, and visitors while maintaining a clean and professional work environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Years of Experience:
3-5 years of experience as a painter in various settings, including residential, commercial, industrial and facilities operations. Experience in both interior and exterior painting a plus.
- Knowledge of: Residential and commercial/industrial practices and processes of the painting trade; paints, varnishes, lacquers, enamels, epoxies, paint removers, and related materials, and of their properties and application; applicable code requirements’ methods and practices followed in the maintenance of tools, machinery, and equipment; occupational hazards of the painting trade and precautionary measures to be observed.
- Ability to: Operate and use required tools and equipment skillfully and safely; match paints and apply finishes to a wide variety of surfaces; estimate time and materials required on widely varied assignments; keep computerized records and prepare reports; perform heavy physical labors; coordinate work flow to multiple projects; read, comprehend, and work from plans and blueprints’ follow and give oral and written instructions; maintain cooperative working relationships; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse population.
Education:
High school education or general education degree (GED) OR trade school apprenticeship program that includes theory and on-the-job work.
Physical Activities of the Position:
Must be able to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting equipment (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking. Must be able to safely use manual tools and power equipment common in the construction trades. Must be able to handle hazardous materials safety and tolerate exposure to electrical hazards. Candidates must possess the ability to ascend ladders measuring 4 feet, 8 feet, and 16 feet in height.
Environmental Factors:
The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to set and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to occasionally loud. Subject to inside environmental conditions including heated pool area. May be subject to infectious waste, disease conditions including TB, Hepatitis B, AIDS virus.
