Position Overview
The Unarmed Security Officer is responsible for helping maintain a safe, secure, and professional environment for company property, employees, visitors, and clients. This role focuses on visible presence, observation, access control, incident response, and customer service. The ideal candidate is alert, dependable, and skilled in communication and de-escalation while enforcing site policies in a calm and professional manner.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties, and others as assigned, are required for this position:
- Patrol assigned areas on foot or by vehicle to observe and report suspicious activity, safety hazards, or unauthorized access
- Monitor and operate surveillance cameras, alarm systems, and access control equipment
- Control access to buildings and restricted areas by verifying identification, credentials, and visitor logs
- Respond promptly and appropriately to alarms, emergencies, disturbances, and security incidents using non-physical and de-escalation techniques
- Observe, document, and report incidents accurately through daily activity logs and incident reports
- Provide a visible security presence to deter theft, vandalism, and other policy violations
- Assist with crowd control and line management during events or high-traffic periods
- Conduct routine safety inspections of facilities and report unsafe conditions or maintenance issues
- Provide courteous customer service to employees, visitors, and vendors while maintaining professional boundaries
- Enforce property rules and regulations consistently and fairly without the use of weapons
- Communicate effectively with management, law enforcement, and emergency responders when necessary
- Escort employees or visitors to vehicles or designated areas upon request
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualification Requirements
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to meet the following requirements:
- High school diploma or GED required
- Previous unarmed security, military, law enforcement, or customer service experience preferred
- Valid security guard license/card as required by state or local regulations
- CPR/First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain after hire
- Strong observation, reporting, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to remain calm, professional, and effective in stressful or emergency situations
- Basic computer skills for report writing and monitoring systems
- Reliable, punctual, and professional appearance and conduct
Work Environment
- Work is performed on-site at assigned facilities or properties
- May include indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to varying weather conditions
- Shifts may include evenings, weekends, holidays, or overnight hours based on operational needs
Physical Demands
- Ability to stand, walk, and patrol for extended periods
- Ability to lift or carry up to 30–50 pounds occasionally
- May require climbing stairs, bending, stooping, and responding quickly to incidents
- Sufficient vision and hearing to monitor surroundings and detect unusual activity
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
- Valid driver's license if driving or mobile patrol is required
- State-issued unarmed security guard license/card (as required by jurisdiction)
- CPR, AED, and First Aid certification preferred or required within a specified timeframe after hire.
