Our Lynnwood office is growing and seeking a Department Manager to lead our well-established Construction Materials Testing and Special Inspections services team. This position provides opportunities to work on high-profile construction, transportation, power generation and transmission, high-rises, stadiums, infrastructure, and other projects. Our presence in the Seattle market started in 1984, and we have a long-standing tradition of serving our community and clients with solutions for the natural and built environment.
As Department Manager, you will lead a team of over 30 professionals, including Project Managers, Special Inspectors, Technicians, a Lab Manager, and Laboratory personnel. You will also be part of a high functioning leadership team that guides over 100 professionals in construction materials testing and special inspections, geotechnical engineering, environmental consulting, and environmental planning services.
Essential Roles And Responsibilities:
Lead the team. Ensure project managers and staff perform quality work and complete projects on time, within budget, and in accordance with the client’s requirements and our company policies, procedures, and standards. Provide oversite and mentoring with the team on preparation of proposals and cost estimates to clients to ensure proper scoping of services, staff availability, and pricing. Supervise the daily operations of the department including safety of our team above all else, staff career development (i.e., training, mentoring, and performance review), utilization of equipment and facilities, quality of services and work product, timely delivery of services and deliverables, and adherence to policies and procedures. Work with the department leaders on business development activities to identify, develop, win, and execute project opportunities and build and maintain client relationships.

Essential Roles And Responsibilities:
- Lead safety efforts for team and ensure team follows safety rules and guidelines. Responsible for creating and modeling a safe work environment; demonstrates safety practices.
- Responsible for completing and overseeing preparation of proposals and cost estimates with varying degrees of complexity.
- Plan for and execute the recruitment, selection, training, mentoring, and development of all employees in the department.
- Work with the office and department leadership teams to prepare and execute the department annual business plan.
- Oversee and manage the success of the key department metrics of revenue growth, staff chargeability, project billing and collections, and project profitability.
- Understand and manage project-related risks. Be familiar with what could go wrong on a project and how to mitigate risks. Be familiar with company risk policies.
- Promote continuous quality monitoring and improvement on projects. Monitor quality standards and practices. Engage other professionals in the organization on complex projects at their onset to ensure project quality is delivered.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Geology plus 8 years’ practice experience. Or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 12 years’ related experience.
- Previous supervisory experience.
- A valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history may be required.
- Certification or licensure in field of expertise (PE preferred).
