Purpose of Your Job Position
The primary purpose of the Floor Nurse position is to:
- Provide direct nursing care to residents.
- Supervise the daily activities and performance of nursing assistants.
- Ensure compliance with the Florida Nurse Practice Act, and all federal, state, and local standards governing the facility.
- Support the Director of Nursing and Nurse Supervisor/Unit Manager in maintaining the highest standards of quality resident care.
Delegation of Authority
As a Floor Nurse, you are entrusted with the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary to:
- Direct and oversee care delivery.
- Coordinate nursing activities.
- Make decisions in accordance with your scope of practice and facility policy.
Core Job Functions
1. Administrative Duties
- Direct daily functions of CNAs.
- Ensure nursing staff compliance with facility policies and nursing procedures.
- Participate in state and federal inspections.
- Coordinate admissions, discharges, transfers.
- Collaborate with other departments to ensure a holistic care approach.
- Document shift activities and incidents thoroughly.
2. Charting and Documentation
- Complete EMR entries for admissions, discharges, transfers, incidents.
- Accurately chart care provided and resident responses.
- Handle physician orders and transcribe accurately.
- Maintain updated, compliant documentation for diet changes, medications, and treatments.
3. Drug Administration
- Prepare and administer medications per physician orders and legal standards.
- Handle narcotics responsibly; maintain accurate records.
- Communicate with physicians and supervisors about discrepancies or concerns.
- Dispose of medications properly.
4. Personnel Functions
- Participate in performance evaluations and staffing decisions.
- Report call-ins and staffing issues.
- Monitor CNA performance, report concerns.
- Maintain a positive, professional working environment.
- Address complaints/grievances per facility procedures.
5. Nursing Care
- Assess or observe patient status depending on RN/LPN role.
- Ensure readiness for new admissions.
- Provide or oversee treatments, therapies, and restorative programs.
- Make physician rounds and implement medical orders.
- Monitor residents’ condition and notify appropriate parties of any changes.
- Perform skilled nursing duties (e.g., tube feedings, catheterization, specimen collection).
- Respond to emergencies, call lights, and resident/family requests.
- Support end-of-life care and post-mortem processes.
