Job Summary:
As an Apprentice/Installer, you will assist in the installation, testing, and troubleshooting of low voltage systems, including fiber optic cables, Ethernet, CCTV, and access control systems. This entry-level position is designed to build your technical skills and knowledge of cabling infrastructure. Under the guidance of experienced technicians, you will gain hands-on experience, while ensuring installations meet safety and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Cabling Installation:
- Assist in installing structured cabling systems, including fiber optic and Ethernet (Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6a) cables.
- Pull, terminate, and test low voltage cables for data, voice, and video communication systems.
- Install and maintain conduit, surface mount raceways, and other cable support structures.
- Label and document all cabling and system installations per company standards.
CCTV System Installation:
- Assist in mounting and positioning of surveillance cameras and equipment.
- Run and terminate coaxial cables or Cat5/6 cables for camera connectivity.
- Perform basic configuration of video management systems (VMS).
Access Control Installation:
- Assist in the installation of access control hardware, such as card readers, Key Pads, Door Position Indicators, Request to Exit sensors.
- Pull cables for access control panels and door hardware and ensure proper wiring and terminations.
Fiber Optic Installation:
- Learn and assist in splicing, terminating, and testing fiber optic cables.
- Follow precise installation guidelines to prevent damage to fiber optic components.
- Use specialized testing tools like OTDRs (Optical Time Domain Reflectometers) for fiber optic systems.
Safety and Cleanliness:
- Adhere to all safety policies and procedures, including proper use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
- Ensure jobsites are clean and safe and assist in jobsite setup and clean-up.
Support Role:
- Assist technicians and project managers with day-to-day tasks.
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working order.
- Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors.
- Be punctual, professional, and maintain a neat appearance at all times.
Learning Objectives:
- Develop basic understanding of low voltage cabling infrastructure, including copper and fiber optic cabling.
- Learn best practices for cable termination, testing, and labeling.
- Gain familiarity with installation of security systems, including CCTV and access control.
- Understand and comply with industry safety standards.
- Build foundational communication and problem-solving skills, working with teams and clients.
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent (technical training in low voltage preferred but not required).
Experience: Some experience, on-the-job training will be provided.
Skills:
- Basic understanding of hand tools (e.g., cable cutters, crimpers, power drills).
- Ability to lift heavy objects, work on ladders, and in confined spaces.
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
Growth Potential:
This role is an entry-level position in low voltage installation with the potential for growth to BICSI Level 2 Technician, Project Manager, and beyond. Training and certifications, such as BICSI Level 1 Installer, will be supported for career advancement.
Pay Rate: $20 - $25 per hour, depending on experience.
