SUMMARY
Terra-Gen is seeking a skilled Mid-Level BESS HVAC Technician to support the critical cooling infrastructure of our Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to standards above the industry’s best practices. Unlike standard comfort cooling, this role focuses on high-precision thermal management systems (liquid cooling or forced air) that keep large-scale battery plants within strict operating temperatures. This role focuses on maintaining high-precision thermal management systems, including liquid cooling and forced air systems, to ensure reliability and optimal performance of our utility-scale battery storage assets.
The Tech II will be responsible for ensuring maximum up-time for renewable energy storage by maintaining the "life support" systems of our battery enclosures. They will perform both scheduled and unscheduled fieldwork, including but not limited to installation, troubleshooting, testing, commissioning support, preventive maintenance, and corrective maintenance of mechanical, refrigeration, and controls systems. While this role does not require the advanced diagnostic authority of a Lead Technician, the Mid-Level Technician must demonstrate solid technical competency, problem-solving skills, and adherence to operational standards.
Ideal candidates will be a self-starter and work under the supervision of the Lead Technician or Maintenance Supervisor and may provide guidance to entry-level staff. This role is hands-on, requires attention to detail, and includes maintaining compliance with safety and quality standards. They may also be assigned the responsibility for observing the quality and safety practices of contractors performing HVAC corrective maintenance, retrofits and commissioning type work.
This full-time position is based near Mojave, CA, and may include rotating schedules, overtime, nights, weekends, holidays and participation in an on-call rotation. Some travel will be required for this position. The role offers growth opportunities within Terra-Gen.

Some of the work will be performed in an office environment; however, the environment for field inspections exposes the employee to the risk of electric shock, heights, moving mechanical parts, hazardous materials, chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles. Additionally, while working outdoors, the employee is exposed to heat, cold, inclement weather, and ultraviolet radiation from the sun. The noise levels may require hearing protection.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on BESS HVAC and thermal management systems.
- Troubleshoot and repair refrigeration, HVAC units, chillers, and liquid-to-air heat exchangers.
- Conduct diagnostic testing including voltage, current, resistance, refrigerant pressure, superheat/subcooling, and airflow measurements.
- Monitor, flush, refill, and maintain dielectric fluid and glycol-based cooling loops; identify leaks and system inefficiencies.
- Assist in system commissioning, performance validation, and thermal optimization using PLC/SCADA systems.
- Respond to high-temperature and system alarms.
- Maintain compliance with high-voltage and environmental safety standards.

Qualifications
Required
- 2–5 years industrial HVAC, commercial refrigeration, or energy storage experience.
- EPA 608 Universal Certification.
- Proficient in electrical troubleshooting for low-voltage controls and high-voltage fans/pumps.
- Understanding of BESS systems, PV systems, and high-voltage safety.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Journeyman or licensed industrial electrician.
- OSHA 10/30, CPR, or NFPA 70E training.
- Experience commissioning industrial HVAC or energy storage systems.
- Ability to train junior technicians and assist in contractor oversight.
- Be able to inspect and work maintenance activities in outdoor construction type areas without handicap access.
- Regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands to dexterously maneuver small parts in confined spaces, such as wires, screws, and various components within electrical equipment.
- Regularly required to kneel, crawl, climb ladders and stairs, use scissor lifts and manlift (cherry picker).
- Lift 50 pounds unassisted and up to 100 pounds assisted.
