LOCATION: This position requires onsite presence 5 days a week at our project site in Fort Benning, GA.

ABOUT THE JOB

The Tepa Companies are seeking a Senior Site Safety & Health Officer (SSHO) is the lead safety professional responsible for providing advanced oversight, leadership, and execution of all site safety and health requirements for construction projects. This position functions as the senior on-site authority on Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliance, United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) EM 385-1-1 standards, Tepa’s Accident Prevention Plan, Activity Hazard Analyses, and other contractual safety requirements. The Senior SSHO serves as the primary liaison between project teams and Corporate Safety leadership and is empowered to make binding safety decisions on Tepa’s behalf.

Job Functions:

  • Serve as the senior point of contact for safety and health communications, updates, reporting, and compliance across construction project sites.
  • Maintain continuous on-site presence during all work activities and verify that all contractors and subcontractors meet required safety standards across all scopes of work.
  • Exercise full authority to stop work, remove personnel, and recommend corrective actions in response to any safety infraction, hazard, or unsafe condition.
  • Lead the investigation, evaluation, and root-cause analysis of incidents/accidents and determine procedural changes needed to prevent recurrence.
  • Implement and enforce all requirements of the approved Health and Safety Plan, Accident Prevention Plan, and Activity Hazard Analyses across the project lifecycle. 
  • Review, approve, and amend Activity Hazard Analyses in response to changing field conditions, scope modifications, or hazard identifications.
  • Conduct and lead daily, weekly, and monthly safety briefings, toolbox talks, orientations, and targeted training sessions for project personnel. 
  • Conduct and document daily and monthly site safety inspections, hazard assessments, and compliance verifications, ensuring corrective actions are completed and tracked.
  • Complete or obtain daily work permits, such as confined space, hot work, safe work, dig permits, and others as required by contract.
  • Identify and document competent persons for specialized scopes such as fall protection, trenching, confined space, equipment operation, and hazardous materials handling.
  • Work with the Project Manager to secure required safety certifications for subcontractor employees, including fall protection, confined space, trenching, heavy equipment, asbestos, and lead abatement activities.
  • Ensure regulatory and client notification requirements are met, and documentation is complete and accurate. 
  • Provide expert safety input for bids, proposals, pre-construction planning, and project kickoff activities.
  • Maintain all required safety logs, inspection reports, training records, incident documentation, and compliance documentation.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma
  • 5 years of continuous construction industry safety experience in supervising/managing general construction and demolition (managing safety programs or conducting hazard analyses and developing controls) 
  • OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety & Health training within the last 5 years
  • OSHA 30-hour General Industry Safety & Health training (optional) 
  • Certified HAZWOPER 40 Hour · Certified AED, CPR, First Aid
  • Have completed at least one of the following safety and health certifications: STSC, CHST, CSM, or ASP 
  • Formal construction or industry safety and health training covering the subjects in USACE EM 385-1-1 
  • Prior experience in an SSHO role
  • Intermediate proficiency in ProCore, BlueBeam, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel 
  • Intermediate proficiency in oral and written communication 
  • Proficiency in conducting accident investigations 
  • Strong problem-solving and hazard-mitigation skills 
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA and USACE EM 385-1-1 requirements 
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and provide direction to junior safety staff
