A proactive, strategic communications leader who brings strong writing skills, executive advising experience, and a big‑picture mindset. This role delivers integrated internal and external communications, drives Issue Management, and supports senior leaders across the enterprise. Ideal candidates excel at shaping messaging for diverse audiences and developing comprehensive communication strategies. Utility communications experience and APR accreditation are preferred but not required.

Position Purpose

Collaborates with Strategic Business Units (SBUs) and business leaders to shape communications strategies and solutions to meet business needs aimed at advancing the enterprise mission and business results. Partners with key stakeholders to strengthen alignment between business priorities and enterprise-wide strategy (structure, processes, systems) ensuring the development and advancement of an empowered, values-driven workplace culture. Advises and coaches senior leaders on integrated communications strategies – that address internal and external audiences. In addition to serving as an advisor, this role also develops, owns and executes communications strategies, plans and tactics to support the business – serving as an external spokesperson on related topics within his or her support scope.

A successful candidate will have an innovative, big picture mindset to develop robust strategies to promote and drive enterprise and business unit initiatives, while also implementing flawless tactical execution. The individual will understand and promote the importance of collaboration across departments within and outside of the Communications organization. Strong verbal, writing and editorial skills are required to support a multi-channel approach focused on the delivery of an effective and quality communications program. Electric utility operations communications experience is preferred, but not required.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Exhibits and promotes integrity, respect and authenticity in all interactions internal or external to TVA Communications and in performance of assigned duties.
  • Demonstrates strong collaboration, open-mindedness and partnership with teammates within and outside the TVA Communications organization.
  • Enhances and protects the TVA reputation and brand; builds understanding and support for the agency’s long-term strategy and enterprise priorities.
  • Model TVA values and competencies, consistently delivering high-quality results and managing complex communications issues and projects for the agency.
  • Creates, develops and executes operations communications strategies, plans and approaches to deliver effective and quality communications.
  • Deliver high-quality results and outcomes aligned to TVA Communications goals and objectives along with electric utility operations best practices.
  • Serve as strategic communications counselor for operations or corporate senior leaders/executives. Identifies key issues and provides experienced communications counsel.
  • Employ various media (written articles, videos, infographics, etc.) to help tell the TVA story. Work directly with senior leaders and internal clients to develop strategic communication plans and provide counsel on strategy, positioning, messages, and media mix.
  • Prepare presentations, talking points, briefing documents and other communication materials for key external and internal meetings.
  • Develop business acumen and understanding of the agency's purpose, people and operations.
  • Manages issues and develops messages for internal and external audiences including supporting and coordinating TVA facility tours.
  • Coordinates with the External Communications Team to support any media inquiries. Responsible for working with the business and External Communications to develop media advisories, new releases, reactive media statements, etc.
  • Collaborates with other communication subject matter experts and leaders.
  • Support the Emergency Response Organization, and the Public Information organization in particular, in accordance with Emergency Plan procedures. Serves as part of TVA’s crisis communications team and participates in storm/emergency response.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education – Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or closely related discipline.

Experience – 4-7 years related work experience

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities —

  • Excellent verbal, written and editorial communications skills
  • Strong writer (Knowledge of AP style preferred), including experience preparing executive presentations, talking points, briefing documents and other communication materials for key external and internal meetings. Writing samples may be requested.
  • Strong strategic communication skills
  • Strong media relations experience serving as a spokesperson including strategy and message development
  • Strong experience developing and implementing communications plans to effectively manage response to complex and emerging issues
  • Experience working with senior levels of management and providing executive counsel and coaching for media interviews, presentations/speeches
  • Experience representing the company externally with challenging audiences in challenging situations
  • Ability to balance immediate and long-term priorities
  • Proven ability to build trusted, sustainable relationships within the business and across HR&C
  • Experience and ability working alongside executives to coach and influence outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound business judgments and drawing conclusions that ensure validity, identifies alternatives and develops specific recommendations
  • Strong business acumen/business experience and continuous improvement methodologies
  • Strong customer service, interpersonal and collaboration skills
  • Ability to adapt to changes quickly, proposing and implementing thoughtful solutions
