The chair of the Department of Manufacturing and Industrial Systems Engineering provides leadership to the department in setting and achieving goals and objectives that fulfill the department’s mission and align with the strategic priorities of the College and University.
The Department of Manufacturing and Industrial Systems Engineering (MISE) at Tennessee Tech University is a new unit created from the merger of Manufacturing Engineering Technology and Industrial Systems Engineering. The combined unit has a BS in Engineering Technology (ABET accredited) with a strong emphasis in manufacturing, a joint BS in General Engineering with East Tennessee State University (ABET accredited), a minor in Industrial Systems Engineering, an MS in Engineering Management, and is expected to have an MS in Industrial Systems Engineering approved before this position is filled. The combined enrollment is 344 students. The combined department also has 11 faculty lines (including the chair) and will be occupying the brand new 81,000 sqft Advanced Construction and Manufacturing Engineering building in Fall 2028. The building will contain state of the art laser welding, CNC, atomizer, industrial-grade water jet cutting, materials characterizations labs, and nationally leading educational smart foundry designed with support from Sinto America. Faculty collaborate with the Center for Manufacturing Research and participate in advising students in the joint PhD program as well as multiple MS programs across the college.

Essential Functions
Provides leadership to the department in setting and achieving realistic goals and objectives that fulfill the department’s mission and align with the strategic priorities of the College and University. Serves as an effective channel of communication between the Department, the Dean of Engineering, and University administration. Manages the financial matters of the department and is responsible for the maintenance of the integrity of the academic programs. Manages department resources, administers faculty and staff evaluations, and is responsible for the general welfare of the department. Represents MISE department in meetings with college and university administration, and departmental advisory board. Promotes professional development of faculty, staff, and students. Maintains appropriate levels of teaching, graduate student advising, scholarly and research activities and participation in professional and public service activities. Maintains and builds strong relationships with industry and community stakeholders. Partners with development officers in fundraising and alumni engagement.
Minimum Qualifications
PhD from an accredited institution in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Engineering Technology, General Engineering, or a closely related field. Evidence of effective teaching, scholarly productivity and career-level accomplishments, and ability to create and build strong financial partnerships. Ability to obtain the rank of tenured Professor in the Department of Manufacturing and Industrial Systems Engineering. Good interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively with students, colleagues, staff and other on- and off-campus individuals. Ability to communicate effectively. Demonstrated good character, professional ethics, maturity of attitude, experience in teamwork and strong familiarity with relevant aspects of an Engineering department. A track record of sustained external funding of research program over the candidate’s career. Demonstration of leadership amongst peers. Commitment to undergraduate student success, community engagement, and to fostering a collaborative culture. Ability to identify opportunities, establish priorities, and lead innovative strategic efforts critical to the success of the College’s academic programs.
Preferred Qualifications
Administrative and management experience. A strong record of teaching and research excellence. Non-academic professional or industrial experience. Leadership experience. Relevant accreditation activity experience, professional society, and public service experience.
Compensation And Benefits
Salary Commensurate with education and experience. Full-time, nine-month, tenure-track position to begin August 1, 2026. Benefits Information
