Description
The Pharmacy Technician assists the Nurse Manager and clinical staff in maintaining appropriate medication management processes within the facility. This includes inventory control, medication preparation under supervision, documentation, and ensuring compliance with applicable Tennessee Board of Pharmacy and facility policies. The Pharmacy Technician plays a key role in supporting safe, accurate, and efficient medication operations throughout the center.
Responsibilities
- Maintain inventory of all pharmaceuticals and controlled substances, including ordering, receiving, labeling, and storage according to state and federal regulations.
- Prepare medications and solutions as directed by authorized prescribers or the Nurse Manager, ensuring accuracy and proper documentation.
- Support medication reconciliation processes for surgical cases, including verifying medication availability and expiration dates.
- Maintain logs and records of medication use, lot numbers, and controlled substances per Tennessee Board of Pharmacy and DEA requirements.
- Assist with daily checks of crash carts, anesthesia carts, and emergency medication supplies.
- Ensure all medications are stored properly and securely in compliance with state regulations and facility policy.
- Participate in periodic audits of medication inventory and assist with resolution of any discrepancies.
- Collaborate with nursing and anesthesia staff to meet medication needs for scheduled cases.
- Assist in maintaining temperature monitoring systems for medication storage areas.
- Support staff education and policy compliance related to medication safety and handling.
- Maintain confidentiality and ensure accurate, complete, and timely documentation in all records.
- Participate in quality assurance activities and performance improvement initiatives as assigned.
Requirements
- One to two year’s experience in healthcare or surgical setting
- Knowledge of medical and pharmaceutical terminology, medication safety standards, and sterile handling requirements.
- Proficiency with inventory management systems and Microsoft Office applications.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
Education/Training:
- High school graduate or equivalent required.
- Active TN Pharmacy Technician registration or Certified Pharmacy Technician credential required.
