Performs state-mandated newborn hearing screenings with audiologist oversight. Maintains and prepares supplies and equipment, materials and/or information development.

Newborn Hearing Screening Technician

Location: Vanderbilt University Medical Center – Medical Center East, 4th Floor

Schedule: Full Time, 32 hours per week

Shift Options: 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. or 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Includes weekdays, weekends, and coverage based on clinical needs.

About The Role

Vanderbilt University Medical Center is seeking a Newborn Hearing Screening Technician to join our pediatric care team. In this role, you will help support early hearing detection and intervention by performing newborn hearing screenings in the newborn nursery and educating families about screening results.

This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with infants, children, and families and are passionate about supporting positive health outcomes during the earliest stages of life. The Newborn Hearing Screening Technician performs hearing screenings for approximately 15–20 newborns per shift, provides compassionate communication to caregivers, and ensures accurate documentation within the electronic medical record.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform hearing screenings for all eligible newborns in the newborn nursery.
  • Conduct infant hearing screening procedures according to established clinical protocols.
  • Communicate screening results to parents and caregivers verbally and through educational materials.
  • Document hearing screening results accurately in the electronic health record (EPIC).
  • Maintain screening equipment and report equipment concerns as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Pediatric Division Director regarding patient, equipment, or staffing concerns.
  • Support Vanderbilt's commitment to high-quality pediatric and family-centered care.

Schedule Details

  • Full-time position, 32 hours per week.
  • Available shifts include:
    • 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
    • 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

  • Coverage is based on clinical needs, including:
    • PTO coverage
    • Illness-related call-outs
    • Weekday and weekend shifts
Qualifications

  • Experience working with newborns, infants, young children, or families preferred.
  • Healthcare, pediatric, childcare, medical assistant, patient care, or related experience is a plus.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
  • Flexible, dependable, and team-oriented mindset.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs universal newborn hearing screenings in accordance with hospital policies, state Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) requirements, and evidence-based protocols. Technician ensures timely screening of eligible infants, accurate documentation, effective communication with families and care teams, and appropriate referral/follow-up coordination. Prepares and maintains equipment and supplies.

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES

  • Rehab PTA/COTA Patient Documentation (Novice): Demonstrates sufficient proficiency in communicating functional impact of assessment findings, treatment interventions, treatment planning diagnosis, and disease process. Considers the communication needs/level of understanding of audience and may share appropriate information/literature.
  • Quality Assurance (Fundamental Awareness): Understands the goal of increasing organizational productivity and individual performance by making the products and services within your work assignments more efficient and more effective. Demonstrates quality management practices on the job which result in superior products and services delivered.
  • Audiology Patient Education (Novice): Communicates functional impact of assessment findings, treatment interventions, diagnosis, and disease process. Adapts communication to the level of understanding of the patient. Determines comprehension and need for repetition and/or revision of methods.
  • Equipment Maintenance (Fundamental Awareness): Has limited experience, training, direct exposure, or past experience conducting maintenance activities in area of assignments.
