Summary

The Tenement Museum is at a pivotal moment. After a challenging pandemic period, we have identified new leadership and are laying the ground work for a new chapter to expand the impact and reach of our mission. We have completed a major preservation project, launched a new exhibit, and adopted a new strategic plan with goals to: welcome more K-12 teachers and students; generate dynamic programs and serve as a thought leader on American history; build public programs to extend engagement; invest in marketing to spark awareness; and build visitation while measuring our impact. Fundraising for new programs and capacity building will be a key aspect of this role. The Director will be responsible for managing a large and growing institutional portfolio comprised of wide-ranging foundations, including family foundations, city, state, and federal institutions, and a corporate membership program. The Director will work closely with the CDO to set and meet ambitious annual institutional giving goals and collaborate with senior leaders in Education, Marketing, Digital, Collections/Curatorial, and Finance to manage and grow existing grants, identify and pursue new funding opportunities, and build the overall institutional giving portfolio. This position will also supervise a full-time Manager of Institutional Giving. The Director of Institutional Giving must have superb written and verbal communication skills, be ambitious, proactive, well-organized, a strategic thinker, and a team-player. They will play a leadership role both within the Development Department and in the organization at large. Flexibility and sense of humor also appreciated.


Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute Tenement Museum’s institutional fundraising strategy ensuring a high level of quality on managing external relationships (cultivation and stewardship) and internal systems (calendar, projections), enabling the Tenement Museum to successfully manage and increase support from institutional donors.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders in Education, Marketing, Digital, Collections/Curatorial, and Finance to develop grant proposals, budgets, and reports and identify new strategies and opportunities to build institutional support for the Museum.
  • Manage and build the Museum’s corporate membership program.
  • Work with the President and CDO to develop and steward relationships with current and potential institutional supporters. This includes the preparation of donor strategy, briefings, and correspondence.
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with current and potential institutional supporters. This includes helping plan and participating in key Tenement Museum events to steward and cultivate institutional donors in-person as well as participating in meetings and phone calls with current and potential institutional supporters.
  • Manage prospect research for institutional donors with an eye toward expanding the overall institutional portfolio.
  • Collaborate with Development Associate and Manager of Institutional Giving to ensure that all institutional giving records and reports are accurate and up to date including calendar and revenue projections.
  • Work with CDO and Manager of Institutional Giving to develop and maintain moves management protocols and reports.
  • Work closely with Financial Management team, Manager of Institutional Giving and senior leadership to develop and ensure shared understanding of grant budgets, timelines, and deliverables and to ensure that invoices, stewardship reports, and contracts are being issued in accordance with deadlines.
  • Manage and direct a full time Manager of Institutional Giving.


Qualifications

  • BA required, advanced degree preferred.
  • 5-years’ experience at a cultural institution with a minimum of 3 years grant-writing preferred.
  • A proven track record of ambitious portfolio management including setting, meeting, and exceeding annual fundraising goals and developing innovative strategies to foster new donor relationships.
  • Experience partnering with leadership staff to develop and realize comprehensive fundraising plans, proposals, budgets, and other high-level donor communications.
  • Experienced supervisor with positive track record of managing and mentoring staff.
  • Experience managing donor relationships and proven track record of front-line fundraising including face to face meetings and solicitation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to listen, question, and synthesize information in a compelling manner for different internal and external audiences.
  • A passion for the Tenement Museum’s mission and a deep commitment to our work to foster learning, perspective, and empathy through sharing the stories of immigrant, migrant, and refugee families in Manhattan.
