ABOUT THE ROLE:

Temple Micah, a vibrant and creative Reform congregation of over 650 families in Washington, DC, is seeking a Janitor. The Janitor helps ensure the day-to-day upkeep of Temple Micah’s building. The janitor is often the first point of contact with the Temple for members, potential members, vendors, and community members, and as such, helps to maintain a member-friendly environment within the synagogue office. The janitor is responsible for cleaning and maintenance of Temple Micah’s facility in a manner to ensure a safe, clean and comfortable environment. Due to the nature of this job, it is not eligible for remote or tele-work and requires working on weekends and evenings.

REPORTS TO:

Executive Director and Building Manager

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Janitorial Responsibilities:

• Maintain and clean public areas, classrooms, offices, kitchen, and storage areas
• Maintain and clean windows, floors, woodwork, ceilings and walls
• Collect trash and recycling and maintain dumpster area
• Move furniture, equipment, and supplies on an incidental basis
• Other cleaning and maintenance duties as required

Event Responsibilities:

• Set up/clean up rooms for worship, functions and meetings, including A/V equipment
• Gather information regarding specific event needs by speaking with event hosts and creating and referencing event calendars and floorplans
• Assist volunteers with tasks as needed, for example supporting Oneg and Kiddush hosts with set-up and clean up
• Ensure the parking lot is clean and properly secure for events held outside.

Maintenance Responsibilities:

• Minor repairs such as replacing light bulbs, repairing dripping faucets, painting
• Maintain grounds by occasional weeding of the parking lot and roof, watering the plants, picking up litter, cleaning and clearing walks and driveways
• Assess and notify Building Manager concerning need for major repairs

EXPERIENCE

• Preferred 1 year of janitorial experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in the basic techniques of cleaning, maintenance and minor repair.
• Ability to provide a safe, attractive, comfortable, and clean environment.
• Ability to follow directions and perform work duties with limited supervision.
• Ability to communicate and work effectively and cooperatively with members and staff.
• Ability to react to change and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner, meeting deadlines as assigned.
• Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials, maximum of 60 pounds.
• General computer skills such as checking email and using Google products (calendar, drive, etc.)
• Ability to warmly interact with members of the community and an interest in getting to know our members on a personal level.
