Thriving Temple in York, PA Seeks Cantor
Temple Beth Israel, a Reform synagogue, located in York, PA is seeking a part time Cantor beginning July 2025. The candidate must be a member of the clergy who can lead the congregation in song and prayer, teach music to both children and adults, and work with our Rabbi to co-officiate major life cycle events and the High Holy Days.
Duties and responsibilities of the Cantor:
The Cantor will collaborate closely on all aspects of Temple life:
- Lead uplifting musical and spiritual worship (2 Friday Shabbat Services per month)
- Teach and prepare our B’nai Mitzvah students (Avg 5-6 per year)
- Direct Adult Choir (occasional services throughout the year)
- Share your enthusiasm for and knowledge of Jewish music with our Religious School students (once month)

- Connect with members so they feel supported and understood
Skills Needed:
- Vocal performance
- Knowledge of Liturgy and sacred music
- Familiarity with modern Jewish music
- Hebrew fluency
- Other musical instruments, especially guitar
Congregational policy regarding the length of tenure of the Cantor:
This position will be a one-year contract. Each year our Executive Committee will determine if a renewal of this contract will be offered in one-year increments.
Background:
Temple Beth Israel is a Reform Jewish Synagogue with a long history of serving the local community that dates back 1877. Our clergy and lay-leadership work in tandem to provide the best spiritual and communal experience for our community. Our congregation consists of many different family dynamics; some born and raised here, others from outside the area; with many diverse backgrounds, including interfaith families. We serve our congregation by offering Friday night Shabbat Services, K-10 Religious School classes, many social events, in-house band and choir as well as helping our community outside the Temple. Our strength is our inclusive community with 245 families and growing.
Compensation:
$40,000-$50,000; salary commensurate with experience
