TITLE:   Occupational Therapist 

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

 

As a licensed professional, adhere to the Occupational Therapy code of Ethics and the Standards of Practice.  Participate in the IEP/Met teams throughout all school sites on an itinerant basis in order to develop skills and strategies to enhance the student’s learning in the educational setting.  As a member of the IEP/MET team, conduct assessments and help to determine student’s eligibility for occupational therapy services and/or therapeutic support and provide these services as well as training, consultation and documentation.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. Arizona Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners license
  2. Minimum of a Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts in a major field of occupational therapy
  3. National Board of the Certification of Occupational Therapy Examiners registration
  4. Knowledge of medical/developmental/pediatric information and indications for occupational therapy treatment, knowledge of the latest research in neurophysiology relating to neurodevelopmental and sensorimotor dysfunction (required)
  5. Completion of six (6) months of supervised clinical affiliations
  6. Two (2) years pediatric clinical experience or elementary school experience (preferred)
  7. Ability to evaluate, plan and implement therapeutic activities for restoration of physical function or minimization of residual disability
  8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school and central office based staff and parents by demonstrating excellent human relations skills and ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  9. Ability to collect data and generate reports
  10. Ability to travel to more than one work location in the course of the day as assigned
  11. Ability to assess needs, develop and implement the IEP, and evaluate outcomes in specialty

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Demonstrate knowledge of federal, state and district laws, policies and standards affecting special education services and disability issues in the public schools.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of district procedures and practices regarding identification, evaluation, placement, service structure and multi-disciplinary support.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with school staff, families, and community members by demonstrating excellent human relations skills and ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Collect data and generate written reports.
  • Participate in the MET process as needed.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of evaluation and diagnostic tools appropriate to students’ physical development and adaptive needs in the school setting.
  • Develop and implement treatment plan and strategies for direct student intervention based on the evaluation results and IEP goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of adaptive devices and assistive technology specific to the student’s needs in the educational environment.
  • Fabricate and/or adjust adaptive equipment as needed.
  • Plan, conduct and/or participate in in-service professional development activities in the area of occupational therapy.
  • Consult with school staff, parents and agencies regarding student needs and progress.
  • Register with Medicaid as a provider and maintain daily notes, Medicaid logs, and time study.
  • Validate outside diagnostic evaluations and program recommendations.
  • Direct activities of assigned instructional assistants as appropriate.
  • May be required to participate in student’s meetings which occur beyond the staff’s work assignment schedule.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
