SPEECH AND LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST
THE POSITION The Speech and Language Pathologist provides designated support and services for students by identifying, assessing, planning, providing, evaluating and improving education services to those individuals who demonstrate communicative difficulties. RESPONSIBLE TO: This position is under the supervision of the Director of Special Education with site administrator consultation. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:
  • Assists and supports the least restrictive placement of students who demonstrate language, speech and hearing problems. 
  • Participates in student identification process through consultative services to Student Study Teams, classroom teachers, school and community in-service, and direct screening services. 
  • Manages due process referrals including parent, teacher and related professional contacts and associated documentation as required by District, SELPA, state and federal regulations.  
  • Diagnoses, evaluates and assesses students who have been referred as possibly demonstrating a language, speech and/or hearing handicap. 
  • Demonstrates knowledge of assessment instruments and procedures, eligibility criteria for language, speech and hearing services, specific disorder area and age level eligibility standards. 
  • Writes reports and service records that document the service provided, handicapping condition, area of LSH service need and appropriate remedial plan. 
  • Serves as a member of the Individualized Education Program team. 
  • Develops appropriate goals and objectives related to LSH services and necessary related paperwork. 
  • Provides designated instruction and services related to Language, Speech and Hearing. 
  • Responsible for direct language, speech and hearing educational services to students. 
  • Provides direct instruction for students who meet eligibility criteria in the areas of articulation, language, voice, and/or fluency.  
  • Develops appropriate intervention strategies and service delivery models to re-mediate speech/language needs. 
  • Develops appropriate group composition and scheduling depending on students needs and the goals of the I.E.P., including coordination and collaboration with site personnel. 
  • Monitors and documents student progress through various written reports, to include IEP reviews, progress and/or clinical records. 
  • Consults with students, teachers, parents, administrators, and other support personnel relative to individuals with special needs, students at risk for LSH disorders or those who have been identified as LSH students. This would include serving as an advisor relative to classroom modifications. 
OTHER
  • Serves as a resource for site level curriculum development efforts. 
  • Supports and facilitates parental and community knowledge and understanding of communication development, its disorders and related issues. 
  • Participates in professional development activities, at the District, county, state and national level, to maintain competence and to be cognizant of current professional issues and directions for service. 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE  A baccalaureate degree or higher from an approved institution. California Speech Pathology License WORK YEAR: 185 Days SALARY: Certificated Salary Schedule ‘A
