MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCIAL SCIENCE TEACHER
THE POSITION
Under general supervision, teaches one or more classes in the field of social science to students in grades 6 through 8, assists in other school programs as assigned, and creates a flexible program and environment favorable to learning and personal growth in accordance with each student’s ability.
RESPONSIBLE TO: PrincipalEXAMPLES OF DUTIES
The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:
Teaches courses in social studies to middle school students utilizing the course of study prescribed by the District approved curriculum.
Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and District curriculum guides.
Develops a balanced social studies program involving factual background material, material on current events, discussion time, and other appropriate activities designed to encourage pupils to develop skills and attitudes, draw conclusions, achieve improved interpersonal relationship, and make value judgments based on scientific methods of inquiry.
Provides an in-depth study of major historical events and periods, the integration of literature, the importance of religion in history, the development of geographic literacy, the balanced presentation of controversial issues with honesty and accuracy, the incorporation of multicultural viewpoints, the use of technology, the inclusion of critical thinking skills throughout the curriculum, the relationship of the past to the present and future, the integration of a variety of non-textbook materials, and the interrelating of other content areas.
Provides individual and cooperative group instruction in order to adapt curriculum to the needs of the pupils with varying intellectual abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.
Maintain school standards of pupil behavior required to provide an orderly and productive environment, in cooperation with the school administration.
Instructs students in proper care and use of materials and organizes storage areas and controls use of materials to prevent loss or abuse.
Evaluates each student’s performance and growth in knowledge, understanding, and skills application then prepares progress reports, report cards, and other monitoring records.
Selects and requisitions materials, equipment, books, etc., which support the District curriculum, and maintains inventory records.
Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the District and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which she/he will be evaluated in conformance with District guidelines and state law.
Communicates with parents, counselors, teachers and advisors on student progress, attending meeting designed to assist in individual student development.
Cooperates in school-wide supervision of students during out-of-classroom activities.
Participates in faculty and/or District committees and the sponsorship of student’s activities.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE
Valid California Credential or license authorizing service in grade levels and areas assigned.
Bachelor’s degree, including all courses to meet credential requirements.
Training and Experience:
Student teaching, internship, or full time teaching experience.
Personal Qualities:
Appearance, grooming and personality, which establish a desirable example for students.
Ability to meet District standards for physical and mental health.
Above average recommendations from student teaching supervisors and other professionals who have observed the characteristics, scholastic attainment and classroom performance of the teacher.
WORK YEAR: 185 days
SALARY: Certificated Salary Schedule ‘A’
