Academic Specialist - Chinese NX

This position is based at Francisco Middle School and reports to Francisco MS Beacon Program Manager. Hourly nonexempt position: $27-28 per hour Work schedule: 40 hours per week. Must be available 9:30 am - 6:00 pm Monday - Friday and occasionally on weekends.

At the heart of the work, staff are mentors of middle school aged youth! We build relationships and safe environments with young people to validate and empower youth to take risks and grow.

This position specifically focuses on the success of Francisco Middle School’s Chinese Newcomer population, which makes up 30% of the school. Even in this population, the students are extremely diverse! They come from all around the world with varied experiences and immigration stories. This position works closely with the Multilingual Department to identify and support English Learning students during and out of school time. The goal is to empower students with academic and social emotional skills so they can exercise their own agency once they enter high school.

This is a unique educator position as it operates under Telegraph Hill Neighborhood Center who synergizes the logic models of San Francisco Beacon initiative, SFUSD ExCEL, and Department of Children, Youth, and Families to carry out services at Francisco Middle School (2190 Powell Street, San Francisco CA 94133). Services revolve around expanded learning opportunities, behavioral health and wellness, transition support between grades and learning pathways, and family engagement.

Organization Description:

Telegraph Hill Neighborhood Center has served the North Beach Community for over 135 years. It focuses on low-moderate income children, youth, families, and seniors. TEL Hi creates and strengthens community bonds, provides health and wellness programs, and works to broaden educational and cultural experiences. With its diverse programs for all ages in multiple locations, TEL HI serves over 700 people per day.

Duties and Responsibilities:

50 % School Day:

  • Partners with teachers and Coordinated Care Teams to provide academic and social emotional support to Chinese NX (Newcomer) Students.
  • Provides in classroom support for a minimum of 8 sections per week.
  • Participates in the Multilingual Common Planning Time meeting.
  • Facilitates tutoring and SEL lunch clubs for a minimum of 2 sessions per week.
  • Manages data trackers that account for student attendance during class time and clubs, student work, and progress toward STAR and ELPAC goals.

50 % Out of School Time:

  • Plan and facilitate daily workshops centered around English language development.
  • Implement best practices and goals developed in Multilingual Common Planning time and Academic Liaison meetings.
  • Utilizes Weikart Youth Program Quality Assessment and ExCEL Quality Action Plan competencies as guidelines for effective programming.
  • Plan and facilitate community building games for students to teach and model SEL skills in structured and unstructured environments.
  • Support Program Manager and Family Liaison to connect with families.

Day to Day Expectations:

  • Punctual and available during all working hours.
  • Check-in with the Program Manager or other designated staff on all working days at the beginning and end of work hours.
  • Assist with any additional responsibilities as delegated by the Program Manager.

Requirements:

  • Able to legally work in the United States of America.
  • Trilingual in Mandarin and Cantonese.
  • High school diploma/equivalent & passed CBEST or IA exam.
  • Be able to lift 25 lbs and endure intense physical activity for at least an hour at a time.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1 yrs Experience working with Newcomer populations.
  • Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences, Youth Development, and/or related fields.

Compensation:

  • Initial Compensation is $27 - $28 based on experience
  • COLA based on grants
  • Merit Based Increases are dependent on grants and high rated performance reviews.

Pay: $27.00 - $28.00 per hour
