Utility Directional, LLC is a Louisiana resident-owned horizontal directional drilling (HDD) company specializing in fiber optic, telecommunications, and utility infrastructure installations. With ongoing broadband expansion programs across Louisiana and the Gulf South, we are rapidly growing and looking for motivated team members to join our field crews.
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled and safety-focused Excavator Operator / Drill Crew Hand to support our horizontal directional drilling operations. This role is critical in assisting with trenchless boring projects, setting up and maintaining job sites, operating excavation equipment, and working as part of a tight-knit drill crew.
Responsibilities
· Safely operate compact excavators (Bobcat E26 or similar) and related equipment for trenching, potholing, and utility exposure.
· Assist drill operators in setting up and maintaining HDD job sites, including mixing drilling fluids and handling rods, reamers, and conduit.
· Perform utility locating, potholing, and daylighting with vacuum excavation equipment.
· Load, unload, and secure tools, materials, and equipment on trucks/trailers.
· Maintain equipment through routine inspections, lubrication, and minor repairs.
· Work closely with crew chief, drill operator, and locator to ensure efficient and safe job completion.
· Adhere to all OSHA and company safety policies; wear PPE at all times.
· Travel to project sites across Louisiana and surrounding states as required.
Qualifications
· Experience operating excavators or heavy equipment required (HDD experience preferred, but willing to train).
· Valid driver’s license (Class A or Class D chauffeur’s license preferred; CDL a plus).
· Ability to work outdoors year-round in varying conditions.
· Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to perform basic maintenance.
· Willingness to learn HDD-specific tasks (drill rod handling, mud mixing, pulling conduit, etc.).
· Ability to lift 75 lbs and perform physically demanding work.
· Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
