JOB TITLE: MS SQL DBA

LOCATION: Austin, TX (onsite position. Candidates MUST currently reside in the Austin area)

START DATE: Approx 6/1/25

DURATION: Initial contract for 990 hours (6 months). This is a typical contracting cycle for ERS. We anticipate multiple contract periods for this position.

JOB DESCRIPTION/MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Performs highly complex (senior-level) database and application administration work in the Information Systems Division. Work involves defining, monitoring, maintaining, developing and tuning integrated database system environments for ERS application areas. Works primarily within Microsoft SQL Server and related application environments. Also actively explores the need and application of AI and data analysis for DBA duties in the near future. Works under limited direction of the

Database Administrator Team Lead with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Provides accurate and timely system and database administration for ERS applications. Plans database server layout, conducts SQL Server instance capacity planning. Implements and manages databases and environments to provide healthy, robust, and scalable database platforms. Insures the integrity, reliability and performance of the database environment for development, test, and production systems.
  • Provides accurate and timely technical support for application client/server and web environments, including development, test and production systems. Provides technical assistance to development, end-user and other staff.
  • Installs, configures, upgrades, and patches database software, application software and other supporting products. Coordinates activities with vendors as necessary for timely installation, software upgrades and maintenance as well as configuration and management ensuring use of best-practices.
  • Performs application and database backup/recovery and cloning.
  • Participates in the development and documentation of operating procedures and metrics and perform quality control to ensure the standards and requirements are met. Analyzes existing procedures for efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Collaborates with various teams including application and network teams.
  • Participates in strategic planning in a highly complex manner, including the AI and data analytics fields.
  • Attends work regularly in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies. Complies with all applicable agency policies and procedures, including safety and standards of conduct. Performs on-call or scheduled after hours work as required.

Qualification Requirements

Education and Training:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in data processing, computer science, management information systems, business or related field; or attainment of a diploma from a two-year technical school with specialization in computer technology. Each year of related experience over the required minimum may be substituted for one year (30 semester hours) of required college credit.

Experience:

  • 5 -6 years of experience in technical computer systems support roles.
  • 3- 4 years of experience as an MS SQL Server Database Administrator.
  • Prefer 2 years of experience in SQL tuning.
  • Prefer 2 years of experience in tuning the performance of MS SQL Server database

environments.

  • Prefer 3 years working with system and database management tools.
  • Prefer knowledge of and experience with AI and data analysis.

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of development and design of systems as it relates to architecture; of project control; of database structures and theories; of current database technologies; of data analysis

techniques. The ability to identify and define user task needs; to process information logically; to conduct short-range and long-range project planning; to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments; to assess future information needs so

that the databases can evolve in an appropriate manner. Ability to follow established procedures and assist in the development of new procedures; to work in a team environment; and handle multiple projects with strong attention to detail. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Uses all knowledge, skills and abilities to apply critical thinking to all aspects of the job. Critical thinking is a process of forming reasoned opinions through observation, information collection, interpretation, analysis, inference, evaluation, and other skills necessary to successfully meet performance standards of the job. Must be self-motivated.

Professional Expectations:

  • Attends all meetings, meets delivery deadlines and is available during ERS office hours.
  • Logs in and remains on agency Jabber during work hours.
  • Attends remote meetings with camera on unless prior arranged for camera off.
  • Coordinates leave and vacation with ERS lead.
  • Must dress appropriately for a business/business casual environment.
  • Communicates respectfully and works harmoniously with all co-workers, customers and vendors.
  • Provides exceptional customer service.
  • Is flexible; able to work under pressure and; able to adapt to change; and able to work on multiple problems and tasks.
  • Takes initiative to prevent and solve problems
