The Principal Software Engineer is the highest technical authority, responsible for strategic technical vision, architectural governance, and ensuring the long term success of Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) as a mission critical NOAA system.
- Establish technical vision and architectural direction aligned with NWS mission objectives.
- Serve as the primary technical interface with Government leadership and program management.
- Oversee system wide architecture, integration strategies, and technology roadmaps.
- Provide final technical authority on design, security, scalability, and performance decisions.
- Lead resolution of the most complex technical and operational challenges.
- Influence governance processes including SDLC, SREC, and system baselining.
- Mentor senior engineering staff and cultivate technical excellence across teams.
- Ensure systems meet high availability, security, and compliance requirements.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, advanced degree preferred
- 15 or more years of software engineering and system architecture experience
- Demonstrated leadership on large scale, high impact federal IT systems
- Expert knowledge of distributed architectures, security frameworks, and operational resiliency
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills

- Clearance: Must be able to pass a background check for a public trust.
