Location: [Insert City, State/Country] – On-site

Job Type: Contract / Freelance / Dispatch (Task-based)

Position Overview

We are looking for a reliable, hands-on Network Field Engineer to assist with an on-site network break-fix and troubleshooting dispatch. The ideal candidate will act as our "Smart Hands" on the ground, working closely with a remote Network Operations Center (NOC) or Level 3 Engineering team to isolate, diagnose, and resolve hardware and connectivity issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hardware Troubleshooting: Diagnose and replace faulty network components, including routers, switches, firewalls, and power supply units (PSUs).
  • Smart Hands Support: Serve as the eyes and ears on-site for remote network engineers, performing power cycles, checking LED status lights, and verifying physical connections.
  • Cabling & Patching: Inspect, trace, test, and re-patch copper (Cat5e/Cat6) or fiber-optic cabling to resolve physical layer connectivity failures.
  • Console Access: Connect a laptop via console cable to network devices to provide remote engineering teams with direct CLI access for configuration and diagnostics.
  • Testing & Validation: Verify that network services are fully restored by performing basic ping and traceroute tests before leaving the site.

On-site Requirements & Tools

  • Required Tools: Must bring a laptop with an active internet connection (tethering/hotspot), a console cable (RJ45 to USB or Serial), and basic IT hand tools (screwdrivers, snips, velcro/zip ties).
  • Communication: Must have a smartphone with an active messaging/calling app (such as WhatsApp or Microsoft Teams) to maintain real-time communication with the remote support team.
  • Professionalism: Adhere to all on-site safety, ticketing, and check-in/check-out reporting protocols.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Proven experience in IT field support, network engineering, or desktop/infrastructure support.
  • Strong understanding of basic networking concepts (TCP/IP, routing, switching, VLANs) and physical infrastructure.
  • Experience working with major enterprise hardware vendors (e.g., Cisco, Juniper, Fortinet, HPE, Aruba).
  • Ability to work independently under the guidance of remote technical leads.
  • Must be locally based in the target area with immediate or flexible availability for dispatch.
