Description of Duties: The Georgia Department of Education – Georgia Academy for the Blind is recruiting for a Music Teacher. Under general supervision, provide support and assistance to the Georgia Academy for the Blind, including support for assessment and treatment for persons with hearing loss.

Description of Duties:

  • The Georgia Academy for the Blind is accepting applications for Special Education teachers for students with multiple disabilities in self-contained classroom settings. 

  • Applicants should hold or be eligible for a certificate issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission in the area of Special Education Adapted Curriculum Consultative and must meet the definition of Highly Qualified as defined by NCLB.

  •  Provides a comprehensive educational program to meet the needs of students who are visually impaired or multi-disabled in a residential school setting.

  •  Responsibilities include assessing and documenting students' educational needs to develop and implement appropriate instructional plans; developing appropriate instructional materials; integrating assistive technology into classroom activities; and utilizing innovative and research-based instructional techniques and practices.

  • Plan and deliver music lessons aligned with state and school curriculum standards.

  • Teach students fundamental music skills, including rhythm, melody, harmony, and music theory.

  • Provide instruction in vocal and/or instrumental music.

  • Encourage creativity, self-expression, and appreciation for different styles of music.

  • Prepare students for performances, concerts, and school events.

  • Maintain classroom management and a safe learning environment.

  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and staff to support school programs and activities.

  • Evaluate student progress and provide feedback to students and parents.

  • Maintain music equipment, instruments, and instructional materials.

 This position will teach visually impaired/multi-disabled students in Early Childhood (P-5), Middle Schools (4-8), or High School.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following:

  • Master’s degree in Visually Impaired (K-12) 

     

  • Background in visual disabilities, intellectual disability, behavior disorders, or interrelated special education, cognitive disabilities, autism, orthopedic impairments, and other sensory disabilities.

  • Classroom experience with visually impaired or multi-disabled children 

  •  Elementary or Secondary academic certification 

  • Experience working with visually impaired or special needs students

  • Salary based on years of experience and certification. Teachers are paid on a GaDOE State Schools teacher Salary Schedule. This is a 10-month position paid on a 12-month basis. Salary will be based on the number of days worked. 

Minimum Qualifications:

Must possess or be eligible to obtain a Georgia Teacher Certificate in Special Ed. Adaptive Curriculum and in Special Education for the Visually Impaired. Must know about Alternative/Augmentative Communication (A/AC) and have a basic understanding of the use of computer technology for multi-disabled learners.
