Head Varsity Softball Coach
Reports To: Activities Director / Athletic Director and Building Administrator
Position Summary
The Head Varsity Softball Coach is responsible for leading the high school softball program by providing effective instruction, fostering sportsmanship, ensuring student-athlete safety, and operating the program in alignment with district values, board policy, and Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union (IGHSAU) regulations.
Primary Responsibilities
Program Leadership
- Lead and manage all aspects of the varsity softball program.
- Establish clear expectations for conduct, academics, and team culture.
- Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect.
Coaching & Instruction
- Plan and conduct organized, effective practices and competitions.
- Teach softball fundamentals, strategies, and skill development.
- Evaluate athlete performance and provide constructive feedback.
Student-Athlete Support
- Monitor academic eligibility and encourage academic success.
- Communicate expectations, roles, and progress with athletes.
- Implement accommodations for students with medical plans, IEPs, or 504 plans in coordination with administration.
Safety & Supervision
- Ensure safety during practices, competitions, and travel.
- Enforce proper equipment use and injury prevention protocols.
- Follow concussion management and emergency procedures.
Compliance & Professional Conduct
- Adhere to district policies, board regulations, and IGHSAU rules.
- Maintain professional, respectful communication with athletes, parents, officials, and school staff.
- Serve as a positive role model representing the school and district.
Qualifications
Required
- Valid Iowa coaching authorization or ability to obtain prior to season.
- Knowledge of softball rules, fundamentals, and strategies.
- Ability to work effectively with high school students and families.
Preferred
- Previous softball coaching or competitive playing experience.
- Strong leadership, organization, and communication skills.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and demonstrate softball skills for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry athletic equipment.
- Work performed outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Contract & Compensation
Seasonal position compensated according to the district's approved coaching salary schedule.
