JOB SUMMARY
Summary: Provide clean, well-kept grounds and facilities, working closely with the building staff to sustain and enhance a safe & caring community to produce enthusiasm for life-long learning.
RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performance Responsibilities (Duties may vary by season, school-level and activity usage).
- Cleans/preserves designated spaces, equipment, etc., in assigned buildings to meet health standards.
- Clean rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and/or draperies using vacuum cleaners and/or shampooers.
- Sweep, scrub, wax, and/or polish floors, using brooms, mops, and/or powered scrubbers.
- Dust and polish furniture and equipment.
- Wash windows, walls, ceilings, and woodwork, waxing and polishing as necessary.
- Empty wastebaskets and transport other trash and waste to disposal areas.
- Move and arrange furniture as required.
- Remove debris from driveways, garages, bus loading areas, and entrances to buildings.
- Set up and take down lunch tables and chairs for all events; move them within the building if needed.
- Moves cafeteria tables within the building for special events.
- Raise and lower flag at beginning and end of day when applicable.
- Fill in for other shift custodial absence as requested by Administration.
- Makes recommendations to improve service and ensure a more efficient operation.
- Examines building and reports the needs for repairs of failed equipment.
- Request repair work as discovered and report needs immediately for maintenance.
- Keep equipment and work area clean and neat.
- Perform minor adjustments and repairs as needed (i.e. plumbing, electrical, baseboards, drywall, etc.)
- Follows the chain of command as required.
- Restock disposable items and provide inventory usage and data.
- Requests supplies and equipment to complete required cleaning.
- Assist visiting public utilizing the facilities with directions within the building and in obtaining and setting up equipment.
- Reports to work each day neat and clean.
- Works in all types of weather conditions.
- Must be able to get along with a variety of people.
- Regular and reliable attendance and gets to work on time.
- Manages ones’ own time, and the time of others, efficiently.
- Attend in-service training and school meetings as requested.
- Demonstrates a positive attitude, loyalty, cooperation, teamwork, attendance and safety.
- Sort clothing and other articles, load washing machines, and fold dried items.
- Maintains good public relations with students, parents, faculty and community.
- Assist staff, coaches, adult education, and building rental groups in operation of school activities.
- On call for emergency situations and/or when alarms go off outside normal working hours.
- Responsible for the security and safety of the building.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Able to read, write and interpret rules, reports and procedural manuals as necessary.
- The ability to communicate information (orally and in writing) in an understandable manner.

- Able to recognize problems, determine causes, and take appropriate action for resolution.

- Experience in a custodian department or related experience preferred but not required.
- Knowledge of the basic techniques of floor maintenance, including carpet, tile, wood, and terrazzo.
- Basic knowledge required to identify building conditions and/or chemicals which could be hazardous.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing and electrical systems.
- Knowledge of how to safely use, post notice, and dispose of chemicals.
- Have a basic working knowledge and understanding of boilers; heating and cooling units.
- Able to perceive identification numbers marked on material; read/understand numbers and volumes.
- Have either the knowledge or ability to be trained to fulfill the responsibilities of the job.
- Knowledge of fire and safety codes is useful, but not mandatory.
- Knowledge in wall and window surface maintenance is preferred.
- Ability to adjust to unexpected situations.
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff, students, and the public.
- Must have clear criminal and child abuse background checks.
- Pass physical at time of hire.
SPECIFICATIONS AND/OR QUALIFICATIONS
- High School diploma or its equivalent.
- Ability to work well with other employees, administration, students, and community.
- Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned responsibility.
- Prior custodial service experience preferred, but not required.
- Ability to pass required background check and physical.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Certification of good health signed by a licensed physician. (Must pass a physical prior to employment.)
- Must be able to work with interruptions frequently during a work shift.
- Must be capable of walking/standing constantly.
- Must be capable of occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds to waist level.
- Must be capable of occasionally carrying 25 pounds at waist level for a distance of 100 feet.
- Must be capable of lifting folding cafeteria tables.
- Must be capable of climbing a portable and a fixed ladder.
- Must be capable of occasionally going to the rooftop of the building (for work or to retrieve items.)
- Must be capable of operating a buffer/scrubber for up to 1 hour at a time.
- Must be capable of frequently using wet/dry mops for up to 30 minutes at a time.
- Must be capable of performing circular motion tasks with the hands, such as washing/dusting white boards, black board, windows, furniture, etc.
- During winter months, must be capable of operating a single-stage snow thrower or shoveling snow.
- Must be capable of frequently operating a vacuum machine for up to 1-1/2 hours at a time.
- Must be capable of frequently squatting or bending over for up to 3 minutes at a time.
- Must be capable of occasionally lifting staging sections with hands.
- Must be capable of occasionally pushing wrestling mat sections onto portable carts. (secondary)
- Must be capable of pushing a folding chair portable cart, then lifting folding chairs off or onto the cart.
- Must be capable of occasionally pushing/pulling bleacher sections.
- Must be capable of occasionally using basic hand and/or electrical tools.
- Must be capable of using cleaning chemicals with recognized inhalation and absorption hazards.
- Must be capable of occasionally working in extreme temperatures, humid and dusty environments.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment, and may include duties performed on field trips away from the school. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by dust or other materials.
