School Nurse - Full-time School Year Position (fall 2026 start)

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE:                                                            Nurse

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Education Level: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.  A valid South Dakota Registered Nurse license.

1. Experience Desired: One to three years experience in the health care field, preferably community health or pediatrics.

1. Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up 35 pounds intermittently during an eight hour day.  Requires constant hearing, hand-eye and mind-eye coordination; intermittent speaking and walking.  Requires frequent keyboarding, repetitive motions with the wrists, hands, and fingers.  Standing, turning, and stooping are required.

WORKS WITH:                                                    Superintendent, Business Manager, Building Principals, Special Education Director

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES MAY INCLUDE:

1. Consults with administrators to determine goals and services.
2. Serves as a team member in identifying, evaluating, and providing services for children.
3. Collects information about the health and developmental status of the student in a systematic and continuous manner.
4. Uses data collected about health and developmental status of the student to determine a nursing diagnosis.
5. Develops and maintains a nursing care plan with specific goals and interventions that are unique to that student’s needs.
6. Serves as a liaison between the school and community health and welfare agencies and the medical profession.
7. Focuses on prevention of illness, disability, and the early detection and correction of health problems.
8. Assists with the development and maintenance of student health records.
9. Reviews student immunization records to assure compliance with regulations.
10. Communicates with colleagues, parents and students.
11. Facilitates referral of students and families to appropriate district and community services.
12. Participates in ongoing professional growth.
13. Administers medications, treatments, and procedures as directed by the student’s physician and district policy.
14. Acts as first responder for all student and staff medical emergencies during the school day.
15. Trains and supervises staff in delegated tasks.
16. Provides health education for students, staff and parents.
17. Maintains and assures confidentiality of information.
18. Inventories and requests equipment and materials needed in assigned buildings for health care.
19. Maximizes instructional and nursing time.
20. Participates in professional and/or community organizations.
21. Complies with school district policies and operating procedures.
22. Performs other duties as assigned by Superintendent.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. Inside and Outside

1. Climatic Environment – Climate controlled environment with some temperature variations. Typically, work is conducted in a comfortable environment.

1. Hazards – Occasional travel may cause exposure to hazardous driving and walking conditions.

1. Work Year – This position is for a contract year. Duties of the position are performed between August 1^st and June 30^th.
