TDIndustries is seeking an experienced 1st Grade Stationary Engineer to support the operation of the Rice University Central Plant in Houston, TX. This position is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of central utility systems that provide heating, cooling, steam, and electrical services to the campus. The Stationary Engineer will work as part of the TDIndustries on-site facilities team, ensuring uninterrupted service to critical academic, research, and residential buildings while upholding TDIndustries' safety and service standards.
Essential Duties
- Operate, monitor, and control central plant systems including boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, compressors, and auxiliary equipment
- Utilize Building Automation Systems (BAS) and manual controls to adjust plant operations and respond to system demands
- Perform routine plant rounds, inspections, and operational checks to ensure safe and efficient equipment performance
- Respond promptly to alarms, equipment failures, and emergency situations to minimize downtime and protect campus operations
- Perform routine maintenance, operational adjustments, and minor repairs on mechanical and electrical plant equipment
- Coordinate activities with TDIndustries supervisors, Rice University facilities staff, and third-party contractors
- Maintain accurate logs, shift reports, and operational documentation in accordance with TDIndustries and client requirements
- Ensure compliance with all applicable safety policies, environmental regulations, and operating procedures
- Support plant startup, shutdown, seasonal changeovers, and load optimization
- Participate in preventive and predictive maintenance programs
- Provide guidance and support to junior engineers or operators as needed
Minimum Requirements
Valid Texas 1st Grade Stationary Engineer License, maintained in good standing
Minimum 5 years of experience operating large central utility plants, district energy systems, or industrial facilities
Strong knowledge of high-pressure boilers, chillers, steam systems, and electrical distribution
Experience working with computerized BAS/SCADA systems
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals
Strong troubleshooting, decision-making, and mechanical aptitude
Ability to work independently while following TDIndustries and client protocols
Experience supporting higher education, healthcare, or mission-critical facilities
Prior experience working for a facility management or service provider
Knowledge of energy efficiency, sustainability initiatives, and reliability-centered maintenance
Lead engineer or shift leadership experience
Ability to work in a central plant environment including mechanical rooms and outdoor equipment areas
Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and lift up to 50 lbs
Comfortable working around high-pressure steam, rotating equipment, and electrical systems
Willingness to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call as required
