What are the responsibilities and job description for the VP LTC Underwriting position at TDC Brand?
The Doctors Company, a Napa California based medical provider liability insurer, recently established a new subsidiary to focus primarily on Excess & Surplus lines business in healthcare, managed care and other professional liability lines of business. This subsidiary, TDC Specialty Underwriters, Inc. (TDCSU) is headquartered in Farmington, Connecticut.
TDCSU is currently seeking VP level underwriting and team leader candidates to lead certain underwriting segments in our medical professional liability underwriting group.
Responsibilities:
The VP position leads a specific underwriting segment(s) and reports to the business group EVP. This position manages other VP underwriters and any underwriting supervisors for their respective segment(s). The VP is expected to have a very high level of expertise and commitment to the subject matter of their business segment, providing the EVP the level of detailed insight needed to make informed choices supportive of organizational goals. This role has broad decision-making authority, subject to referral consultation parameters in place with the EVP.
Working under the general supervision of the group leader and acting within authority appropriate to this position, the VP is expected to:
- Develop product and distribution strategies as well as creates critical technical artifacts (underwriting guidelines, policy forms, rating workbooks etc.).
- Acts as the relationship owner and decision-maker with the distribution community.
- Actively supervises the day to day marketing and technical underwriting activities and staff for respective segment(s).
- Leads the ongoing analysis of portfolio make-up and performance for the purpose of defining and executing necessary corrective actions.
- Assures developments in the operating environment of their segment(s) are monitored, analyzed and incorporated into day to day decision-making.
- Coordinates efforts with support function leaders and actively engages in claims review process. rigorously select, evaluate and secure individual accounts that meet our underwriting standards and guidelines,
- provide technical support, decision authority and, in some cases, supervision of underwriting staff
- participate as decision contributor in underwriting profitability evaluations and improvement action owner
- constructively engage with peers and company support areas in day to day decision-making and customer service

Preferred Candidates:
- Should possess a strong interest in the dynamics and trends underlying the healthcare industry and related social, regulatory, economic and legal trends impacting it
- RPLU or CPCU designation or interest in pursuing either of these credentials
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree (4 years college) required
- Fifteen (15) or more years managed care liability or other healthcare/medical professional liability underwriting
- Equivalent experience in a broker capacity is also acceptable
- Proficiency with Excel, Word and demonstrated aptitude with Windows based operating systems
