Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our finance team. The Assistant Controller provides supervision of daily accounting operations and assists the Director of Finance & Accounting with timely delivery of accurate financial statements and reports. The role focuses heavily on cost accounting, inventory integrity, and intercompany accounting; financial accounting tasks are also required. The ideal candidate will support the month-end closing process with minimal guidance from senior management, impart direction to accounting staff (A/R and A/P), and provide the Director of Finance & Accounting with the data necessary for strategic decision-making.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Managerial & Financial Accounting
- Directly supervise three accounting specialists.
- Supervise the full-cycle month-end close process for six affiliated companies, ensuring all journal entries are posted accurately and timely.
- Assist with preparing comprehensive account reconciliations for all balance sheet accounts, investigating and resolving discrepancies.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal control procedures.
- Assist with preparing monthly financial statements and variance analysis (actual vs. budget).
- Assist with preparation of workpapers for year-end financial statement and tax work performed by external CPA firm.
Costing & Inventory Management:
- Partner with the production and warehouse teams to improve the accuracy of inventory transactions.
- Maintain the standard costing system, performing annual updates and periodic reviews of labor and overhead rates.
- Identify, analyze, and investigate financial irregularities in manufacturing activities and make suggestions to overcome operational and economic inefficiencies.
- Monitor the cycle counting program and assist with physical inventory counts conducted as necessary.
- Manage the obsolescence reserve and ensure proper valuation of raw materials, WIP, and finished goods.
Technical Support and Process Improvement:
- Support Director of Finance & Accounting in other finance and accounting-related tasks, e.g., tax compliance, customer and vendor administration.
- Review staff work for accuracy and provide technical guidance on complex transactions.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement and professional development within the Finance & Accounting Team.
- Other duties and tasks as assigned.
Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
- CPA or CMA designation preferred.
- 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience; prefer minimum 3 years in a manufacturing environment with exposure to major manufacturing, automotive, or similar industrial clients.
Technical Skills
- Experience working with JobBOSS manufacturing ERP or similar (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics products, SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards, NetSuite).
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel (VLOOKUPs, pivot tables) for data extraction, analysis, and reporting.
- Strong proficiency using collaborative features in Microsoft Outlook and Teams.
- Exposure and comfort working with AI and similar developing financial technology (“fintech”) applications.
Pay: $95,000.00 - $105,000.00 per year
