Position Purpose
The Assistant Team Leader (ATL) supports and guides production associates to ensure smooth daily operations while applying Toyota Production System (TPS), 5S, Just-In-Time (JIT), and continuous kaizen principles. Your mission: keep the production line firing on all cylinders by leading people, processes, and problem-solving.
Schedule
Hours: Sunday – Thursday, 7:00 PM to End of Production (overtime required).
Casting Work Environment
The die cast environment is similar to a “non-air-conditioned garage mechanic shop”: hot in the summer, cool in the winter. Associates work near furnaces melting aluminum, requiring 100% cotton, long-sleeve clothing for protection.
12 machines and furnaces operate continuously, each with three robots.
Hearing protection is required and provided.
Exposure to graphite and hydraulic oil is common when changing hoses, dies, or cleaning machines.
Work is hands-on, industrial, and focused on safety, cleanliness, and preventive maintenance.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Leadership & Operations
- Coordinate staffing and resources to complete daily work assignments.
- Coach associates to support skill development and performance.
- Monitor production status to meet customer schedules and expectations.
- Partner with the Production Team Leader to review performance and resolve line issues in real time.
Quality & Compliance
- Perform quality system audits; document results per department requirements.
- Ensure all standardized work, procedures, and quality documents remain up-to-date and followed.
- Verify proper first-piece and last-piece checks, QC check sheets, condition sheets, and PA sheets.
- Initiate containment procedures when necessary and participate in defect investigation and resolution.
Lean Manufacturing & Continuous Improvement
- Apply TPS, 5S, and kaizen principles to reduce waste and improve efficiency.
- Ensure team members are trained according to standard work and documented using spider charts.
- Promote safe, healthy, and environmentally compliant work practices.
Safety & Equipment
- Monitor PPE usage and compliance with all OSHA, EPA, and company policies.
- Assist with machine startups, preventative maintenance follow-up, and routine PM recordkeeping.
- Communicate tool, parts, and supply needs to the Production Team Leader.
- Support temporary ATL duties during absences and line restarts.
Additional Responsibilities
- Train new associates and temporary staff prior to releasing them to production.
- Assist with sorts, startup meetings, audits, and daily paperwork.
- Fill in for absent associates as needed to support line operations.
- Maintain open communication with all support groups and demonstrate Courtesy, Dignity, and Respect.
Qualifications, Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- 3–5 years of experience in a fast-paced manufacturing environment required.
- ERP system experience (purchasing/inventory control) preferred.
- Strong understanding of Lean Manufacturing/JIT concepts.
- Proficiency in English (written and verbal).
- Ability to work effectively in a multicultural, team-oriented environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Additional ATL Requirements
- 2 years of Toyota Industries Group experience preferred.
- Completion of company pre-promotion courses within two years of promotion.
- Ability to train, mentor, and develop associates using TIJI and TI-TC standards.
- Commitment to kaizen, job instruction, and job observation practices.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent standing, walking, sitting, and use of hands.
- Occasional reaching, climbing, stooping, kneeling, or crawling.
- Ability to safely lift and move up to 50 lbs.
- Requires close and distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
- Must maintain a constant state of alertness and work safely.
