Job description:
We are seeking an aide to support our 19-year-old son, a traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivor, engaging in therapeutic, social, and community activities to achieve personal goals. This is an excellent opportunity for an OT, SLP, or a student in one of those fields seeking experience with neurological injuries.
Position Overview:The ideal candidate will have a therapeutic background and work closely with our son to assist him with day-to-day activities: developing and engaging him in therapeutic activities aligned with his occupational goals, finding and attending social and intellectually stimulating events. Our son is a bright, philosophical, empathetic, and articulate young man who is making remarkable progress after a severe brain injury sustained in a biking accident. He is currently in his first year at College of Marin, pursuing a degree in creative writing and has an alt-aesthetic (hair is currently deep turquoise). There is flexibility within the role responsibilities. The selected candidate will receive direct training from his current aides and will coordinate with his school aide regarding scheduling and paperwork.
Examples of current areas of focus include:
- Rehabilitating sensation in left hand and arm
- Fine motor work
- Finding engaging volunteer opportunities
- Practicing speech intelligibility and prosody
- Balance training
Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
- Experience with individuals recovering from brain injuries (occupational therapy, educational therapy, speech therapy, psychology and mental health, or related fields)
- Ability to assist with safe community mobility (navigating between classes, appointments, etc.). Our son walks independently but requires supervision for safety
- Experience with learning strategies and interest in engaging with him on school subjects, particularly creative writing, philosophy and the humanities.
- Experience accommodating the inclusion needs of individuals with disabilities in various settings
- Proactive and creative with adaptive tools and technologies (e.g., note-taking… )
- Comfort with and interest in administering OT and other assessments
- Ability to safely follow the seizure protocol
- Sensitivity to environmental stimuli and the ability to recognize when he may need a quiet break
- Must provide references and pass a background check
- Must have a safe vehicle and a clean driving record
