GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The School Counseling Coordinator/School Counselor provides leadership and coordination for the school counseling program while delivering comprehensive counseling services that support the academic, career, and social-emotional development of students. The position includes counseling, assessment, scheduling, student support services, records management, program coordination, and collaboration with students, parents, staff, and community agencies. Work is performed under the general supervision of the school principal and the supervisor of school counseling.

Counseling and Student Support

  • Provide individual and group counseling services to students.
  • Assist students with academic planning, personal/social development, career exploration, and postsecondary preparation.
  • Counsel students regarding academic, social-emotional, behavioral, attendance, and personal concerns, including crisis intervention and referral services as appropriate.
  • Develop intervention strategies and collaborate with families, staff, and outside agencies to support student success.
  • Conduct classroom guidance lessons and presentations related to personal growth, school adjustment, career development, self-concept, attendance, and responsible decision-making.
  • Provide academic advising and assist students with course selection, scheduling, and graduation planning.
  • Register and orient new students regarding school procedures, expectations, and academic requirements.
  • Participate in Child Study, Section 504, eligibility, and special education meetings as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, parents, and support staff to address student needs and promote student success.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and community agencies to support student well-being and access to services.

Testing, Scheduling, and Student Records

  • Coordinate and assist with the administration of standardized assessments and related testing procedures.
  • Interpret and communicate assessment data and test results to students, parents, and staff.
  • Maintain accurate student records, transcripts, class rankings, grade point averages, and enrollment information.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate processing of transcripts and records requests.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of student schedules and course offerings.
  • Coordinate procedures related to registration, scheduling, summer school, and graduation requirements.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information in compliance with FERPA and other applicable laws and regulations.
  • Oversee permanent student records maintenance, retention, transfer, and purging procedures.
  • Interpret and evaluate transfer student transcripts for consistency with division requirements.

Elementary School Responsibilities 

  • Develop and maintain an effective elementary school counseling program aligned with division goals and School Board policy.
  • Support the principal in implementing social-emotional learning initiatives and student support programs.
  • Communicate division policies, goals, and counseling program objectives to students, parents, staff, and community members.
  • Plan, organize, and implement school counseling activities and events.
  • Assist with academic transition planning for fifth-grade students.
  • Provide professional development and consultation to instructional staff regarding student support and social-emotional needs.
  • Develop and maintain the school counseling calendar.

Professional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrate knowledge of counseling theories, practices, group dynamics, and student support strategies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of child and adolescent development, including multicultural and diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of the ASCA National Model and comprehensive school counseling programs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of K–12 curriculum, instructional programs, Virginia Standards of Learning, and graduation requirements.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of standardized testing administration, interpretation, and reporting procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of laws and regulations affecting students, including FERPA, IDEA, McKinney-Vento, student confidentiality requirements, and related federal and state mandates.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with student information systems and data management tools.
  • Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, administrators, and community agencies.
  • Demonstrate organizational, leadership, problem-solving, and collaborative skills.

COORDINATION AND LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and support for school counselors and the counseling department.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with division goals and the ASCA National Model.
  • Identify and monitor program goals, priorities, and effectiveness.
  • Participate in annual counseling department planning, program evaluation, and coordination/facilitation of professional development.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effective use of counselors’ time and responsibilities.
  • Interpret and communicate federal, state, and local policies, regulations, and procedures related to school counseling services.
  • Support counselors in the use of student information systems and data management tools.
  • Coordinate counseling responsibilities related to testing, scheduling, registration, and graduation processes.
  • Interpret policies regarding course offerings, prerequisites, promotion, retention, and graduation requirements.
  • Gather and report data related to graduation rates, scholarships, college enrollment, and testing participation.
  • Collaborate with division leadership and school-based staff on initiatives related to student services and counseling programs.
  • Assist with counseling department budget requests and resource planning.

 

 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree from an approved school counselor education program required.
  • Must hold or be eligible for Virginia licensure with an endorsement in School Counseling.

A comparable combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of minimum qualifications where appropriate.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Some standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Possession of a valid driver’s license.  Regular and reliable attendance required.
