CLASSIFICATION: TEMPORARY

JOB TITLE: HEARING AND VISION SCREENER

REPORTS TO: SITE SUPERVISOR

CALENDAR: VARIES

SALARY: SUPPLEMENTAL SALARY SCHEDULE 

 

Job Summary

The Hearing and Vision Screener conducts student screenings in compliance with Arizona Department of Health Services guidelines and Arizona Department of Education requirements. This position supports the early identification of hearing and vision concerns that may impact student learning and ensures proper documentation, notification, and follow-up in alignment with Arizona state law and district procedures.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Experience in school health, public health, or working with children preferred
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn Arizona hearing and vision screening guidelines
  • Ability to follow standardized procedures with accuracy and consistency
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and time-management skills
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and reporting
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Ability to travel between multiple school sites within the district
  • Must obtain and maintain an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card through the Arizona Department of Public Safety
  • Must complete any state required training for hearing and vision screening procedures

 

Core Role Functions: 

  • Conduct hearing and vision screenings for students in accordance with Arizona state guidelines (A.R.S. §15-101 and related health screening requirements)
  • Complete initial screenings and required rescreenings within state-recommended timelines
  • Accurately record screening results using district-approved data systems
  • Identify students who do not pass screenings and initiate referral/parent notification procedures per district protocol
  • Maintain compliance with state reporting requirements for screening data
  • Collaborate with school nurses, special education teams, and school staff regarding student concerns
  • Assist in supporting referrals related to special education evaluations when hearing/vision data is required
  • Maintain, clean, and properly operate screening equipment (audiometers, tympanometers if applicable, and vision screening tools)
  • Ensure all audiometric equipment meets annual calibration requirements in accordance with state and industry standards
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records in compliance with FERPA and district policy
  • Travel between school sites to complete scheduled screenings
  • Assist with scheduling, coordination, and setup of screening events

Physical Requirements: 

  • Positions in this classification often require physical activities such as stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, and sitting. 
  • The job involves finger or manual dexterity, repetitive finger motion, speaking, hearing, seeing (with correction), and focusing ability. 
  • Employees may be exposed to travel, odors, dust, poor ventilation, workspace restrictions, and loud noises. 
  • The work may require lifting or exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds of force frequently.
