Position Purpose:
The ESL Lead Teacher provides leadership and coordination for the district’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program while also serving as a classroom ESL teacher. The position supports the implementation of effective instructional programs for multilingual learners and ensures compliance with federal, state, and local requirements related to language instruction educational programs.
The ESL Lead Teacher serves as the liaison between the district office, school administrators, ESL teachers, and ESL tutors to ensure consistent and effective services for English learners across the district. The position assists with program planning, professional learning, data monitoring, and compliance with Title III and other applicable regulations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Comprehensive knowledge of second language acquisition, ESL instructional strategies, and culturally responsive teaching practices.
- Knowledge of federal and state laws and guidelines related to English Learner (EL) programs including Title III and NC Department of Public Instruction requirements.
- Ability to support and coach ESL teachers and tutors in effective instructional practices.
- Ability to analyze student data to monitor progress and guide program improvements.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with school administrators, classroom teachers, counselors, and support staff.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with staff, students, parents, and community members.
- Ability to organize, coordinate, and manage multiple program responsibilities simultaneously.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
- Ability to build positive relationships with culturally and linguistically diverse students and families.
Education, Training, Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in education or related field required.
- Minimum of three years successful teaching experience.
- Experience working with multilingual learners strongly preferred.
OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position.
Certification and Licensure Requirements:
- Must hold or be eligible to hold a valid North Carolina teaching license.
- ESL Add-on Licensure (K-12) required or must obtain within a specified timeframe.
- Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license according to North Carolina requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience supporting English Learners in a K–12 setting.
- Experience providing professional development or instructional coaching.
- Experience coordinating programs or initiatives at the school or district level.
- Knowledge of WIDA standards, ACCESS testing, and ESL program compliance requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serves as the district liaison for ESL teachers, tutors, and school administrators regarding ESL program implementation.
- Provides leadership and coordination for the district’s ESL program to ensure alignment with federal, state, and local requirements.
- Provides direct ESL instruction to English Learners according to district assignment.
- Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of ESL program goals and services across the district.
- Supports ESL teachers and tutors through collaboration, coaching, and professional learning opportunities.
- Assists schools with appropriate identification, placement, and monitoring of English Learners.
- Supports compliance with state and federal requirements related to English Learner services including Title III.
- Coordinates and assists with administration of required English language proficiency assessments such as ACCESS for ELLs.
- Monitors student data and progress to ensure effective language development and academic support.
- Collaborates with school administrators and classroom teachers to promote effective instructional strategies for multilingual learners.
- Assists with development and implementation of professional development related to English Learner instruction and cultural responsiveness.
- Supports communication and engagement with families of multilingual learners.
- Assists with preparation of required reports and documentation for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and other agencies.
- Maintains program documentation related to student identification, service delivery, and compliance requirements.
- Assists in the coordination of ESL tutoring services and support personnel.
- Participates in district curriculum initiatives and instructional improvement efforts related to multilingual learners.
- Attends district, regional, and state meetings related to ESL program implementation as appropriate.
- Collaborates with district leadership to ensure equitable educational opportunities for English Learners.
- Conducts meetings with ESL staff as needed to ensure program consistency and communication.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Physical and Environmental Requirements:
This job operates primarily in a school and office environment with a noise level that ranges from low to moderate. The position routinely uses standard office and classroom equipment such as computers, printers, and instructional technology. The employee must be able to interact directly with students, staff, and families. Work is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally. Travel between schools may be required.

Salary : $4,510 - $7,500
