Job Description – ControllerPosition Summary
The Controller is a senior financial leader responsible for building, managing, and scaling the accounting, reporting, and financial control infrastructure of a growing, project-based organization operating across manufacturing, construction, and design functions.
This role owns day-to-day accounting operations while partnering closely with executive leadership to improve visibility into job costs, manufacturing performance, cash flow, grant compliance, and multi-entity financial reporting. As the organization scales production and expands operations, the Controller plays a critical role in ensuring financial accuracy, transparency, and operational discipline.
This position does not own corporate fundraising, capital strategy, investor relations, pricing strategy, or day-to-day operational management. The focus is on financial rigor, systems, and reporting.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Accounting
- Own the full accounting cycle across multiple entities, including general ledger, AP/AR oversight, payroll coordination, and month-end close
- Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable regulations
- Manage relationships with external accountants, auditors, and tax advisors
Job Costing & Manufacturing / Project Finance
- Oversee job cost accounting for manufacturing and construction projects
- Track COGS, labor allocation, materials, and overhead
- Develop and maintain cost tracking systems to support forecasting, pricing, and margin analysis
- Support estimating, budgeting, and financial modeling for new projects and production ramps
Cash Flow, Forecasting & Reporting
- Manage short- and mid-term cash flow forecasting based on budgets, project schedules, and known funding sources
- Prepare forecasts, variance analyses, and executive-level reporting
- Build dashboards and reports that improve visibility into project performance and operational health
Grants, Compliance & Funding
- Support financial reporting, invoicing, and compliance related to grants and other funding sources
- Track restricted funds and ensure alignment with reporting requirements, audits, and timelines
Systems, Process Improvement & Scale
- Strengthen and streamline accounting processes as the organization grows
- Evaluate and improve financial systems, tools, and workflows (accounting software, job cost systems, reporting tools)
- Ensure financial systems and reporting structures can scale with future growth
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field (CPA preferred but not required)
- 7–10 years of progressive accounting or finance experience
- Strong experience with job costing, project-based accounting, and multi-entity financials
- Background in manufacturing, construction, real estate development, or similar industries strongly preferred
- Experience with grant reporting or public funding compliance is a plus
- Advanced Excel skills and comfort building financial models and reports
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate cross-functionally
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary: $100,000-$120K/year based on experience
