Primary Job Function: 

The Reynoldsburg City Schools’ 1:1 Specialized Paraprofessional provides dedicated, individualized support to a specific student with intensive academic, behavioral, or medical needs. Under the guidance of licensed teachers, Intervention Specialists, and/or BCBAs, the 1:1 Paraprofessional ensures student safety, implements individualized academic and behavioral interventions (IEP/BIP), collects data on progress, and facilitates the student’s inclusion in the school community while promoting independence and self-advocacy.  Minimum Qualifications: 

  • High School diploma or equivalent. 
  • Valid State of Ohio Educational Aide Permit. 
  • A valid ESEA (Highly Qualified) credential (requires Associate Degree, 48 semester hours, or a passing score of 456 on the ParaPro Assessment within 60 days of hire or transfer). 
  • Successful completion of BCI & FBI criminal background checks as required by Ohio law.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience supporting students with behavioral, social-emotional, or special education needs
  • Experience working in alternative learning environments, behavior rooms, or structured support setting
  • Current certification in a state-approved crisis management system (e.g., CPI, Safety-Care, PCM)
  • Credentials such as Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or Direct Support Professional (DSP).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Primary functions may include the following duties, responsibilities, skills, abilities, and other characteristics. Individualized Instructional & Behavioral Support

  • Provides constant 1:1 supervision and support to the assigned student throughout the school day, including transitions, lunch, electives and specials.
  • Implement the student’s IEP and BIP with high fidelity, under the supervision of licensed staff.
  • Collect and record precise, student-specific behavioral and academic data (frequency, duration, ABC data) to assist the BCBA or Intervention Specialist in monitoring progress.
  • Scaffold, modify, and adapt classroom assignments in real time to meet the student’s specific learning, sensory, and behavioral needs.

1:1 Safety & Crisis Intervention

  • Maintain continuous line-of-sight or proximity as required by the student’s safety plan.
  • Intervene during behavioral crises using approved non-violent de-escalation strategies to protect the student and others.
  • Act as the primary support during emergency drills, ensuring the student understands and follows safety procedures.

Personal Care & Medical Support (Specific to Student Needs)

  • Assist the student with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including toileting, feeding, hygiene, and diapering, ensuring safety and dignity.
  • Operate and maintain the student’s adaptive or specialized equipment (e.g., communication devices, wheelchairs, sensory tools).
  • Monitor for medical triggers, behavioral precursors, or other individualized concerns and immediately notify licensed staff or the school nurse.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and special education best practices
  • Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
  • Ohio school discipline, restraint, and seclusion regulations (OAC 3301-35-15).
  • Student confidentiality requirements (FERPA/HIPAA).
  • Procedures for supporting students with behavioral, medical, or personal care needs.

Skilled in:

  • Conflict resolution and behavioral de-escalation
  • Observing, documenting, and reporting student behavior accurately
  • Effective communication with students, staff, and families

Ability to: 

  • Maintain accurate records and documentation
  • Supervise students effectively in 1:1, structured, alternative, or medically intensive learning environments.
  • Respond calmly and professionally to challenging behaviors
  • Support students with diverse physical, emotional, and intellectual needs under the direction of licensed staff
  • Collaborate effectively with staff, students, and families to implement individualized support plans

Physical Demands: 

  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, and moving throughout the school day.
  • Ability to transition rapidly from floor to standing position.
  • Push, pull, lift, and carry up to 25 lbs regularly and up to 50 lbs occasionally (e.g., student transfers or crisis intervention).
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and families.

 

Working Conditions: 

  • Exposure to high-sensory environments (loud noises, bright lights).
  • Interaction with students exhibiting challenging or aggressive behaviors.
  • Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, or tissue.

 

Driving Requirement:

  • This position may require driving.
