Role Description The Hard Facer role is a full-time, on-site position based in Conroe, TX. This role is responsible for applying hard-facing materials to PDC drill bits and related components using welding, brazing, or thermal application processes to ensure durability and performance. Day-to-day tasks include preparing surfaces, operating hard-facing and welding equipment, following detailed specifications and quality standards, and inspecting finished work to verify proper coverage and adherence. The Hard Facer collaborates with manufacturing, quality, and engineering teams to support continuous improvement and timely production schedules. The role also requires maintaining a safe and organized work area, performing basic equipment maintenance, and accurately documenting work performed.
Qualifications
- Responsible for the hard facing new steel bit bodies.
- Responsible for the rebuilding of bit bodies through various methods and applications of matrix repair ensuring this meet Taurex standards.
- Experience in matrix body PDC drill bit repair and hard-facing application.
- Knowledge of welding techniques and hard-facing materials.
- Attention to detail and ability to work effectively in a team.
- Responsible for the maintenance of equipment needed for matrix repair.
- Blast and inspection of bits before matrix repair begins.
- Monitors preheat temperatures and controllers.
- Accurately follow paperwork to identify parts of bit that need repairs.
- De-brazing.
- MIG hard face welding, TIG hard face welding, flame spray, roping and Kutrite.
- Grinding and shaping.
- Works in a clean organized manner.
- Participants in any training as needed.
- Promotes respect for operating procedures and adherence to safety protocol and regulations.
- Perform other duties as required by managementExperience with welding or hard-facing processes in a manufacturing or industrial setting, including safe operation of related tools and equipment.
- Familiarity with basic measurement tools (e.g., calipers, gauges) and visual inspection techniques to verify hard-facing coverage and integrity.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety, including use of PPE and adherence to safety procedures and guidelines.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as standing for extended periods, lifting components, and working in a shop environment.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills to coordinate with production, quality, and engineering personnel.
- Prior experience in oil and gas manufacturing, drill bits, or metal fabrication is preferred but not required.
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical or vocational training in welding or metalwork is a plus.
- Must be able to pass a drug test and background check.
